nuance voice control...not much interest?

I have been searching around for information regarding the newest voice control system but not much information from members. Perhaps this is a special niche where not many people either have experienced it or they have an older model year? Seems only the '09 could even possibly have this option. Just curious if anyone has information on it like if the '09 can upgrade to it and if anyone has used it and what they think about it? Thanks for any info.

I'm with you...I keep searching to see if the navigation voice control system can be retro-fitted to the '09's. My dealer is totally clueless. I would love to have it on my '09. Anyone know or try the system?

What's been changed versus previous years?

I like the voice command stuff. It's pretty good at understanding me and it beats fiddling with the iDrive knob.

I have to admit though that I didn't even know my M3 had voice command until like a week after I bought it.

We use a Nuance platform for our medical dictation and it is pretty slick.

Even with the upgrade, it may be heard to use over the screams of the passengers in my car.

It looks like the main roll out of this new Voice Control feature will be in the 03/10 production, with the E92 LCI. What is uncertain is if this feature can be retrofitted by software into the pre-03/10 iDrive; I think it will definitely be for the MY2010 iDrive, but shaky for the MY2009. No so much due to any technical difficulty but due to BMW reluctance to retrofit anything lately.

ALL UK M3's when ordered with Bluetooth and Telematics, can add "Voice", it's coming on mine.

That's not the "Voice" that this thread is about. The iDrive has a completely different Voice Control than the one in the Telematics. Actually, once both iDrive and the Telematics are installed in the car the iDrive Voice Control takes over the one in the Telematics.

The 2010 voice recognition is much improved, but you still have to speak the address by town/city code, then street then house #.

I didn't try pulling up a music selection off the hard drive yet & since it's under wraps for the Winter, I won't until maybe March, April or May.

Errr no you dont, street only and it lists streets in the area.
Edited: If you input by Voice commands a street name only ",One-Shot Destination Entry" here http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/13/2...ontrol-system/

, then a list will come up with that street's name in different areas, just pick the area and away ya go.

Not in the UK, Voice controls all the aspects.......... IF professinal Nav is ordered. But you still need part no 620 which is "Voice" and costs an extra £315.00

Bluetooth & telematics does NOT allow any VOICE input at all, check youre manuals.
Telematics is just a simm card, and of course bluetooth just enables a phone

In the USA our Telematics module does include a Voice Control... since the MY2005 E46.

And still your post is not applicable here at all.

Per their press release you would think that all MY 2010s were coming with the updated Nuance system:

I had an '06 e60 and I wouldn't say it is that much better. Faster yes, but at least in the '06 you could say "call <name>". Also it seems like simple menus are not as accessible like "parked car ventilation".

I agree that I pretty much live without it but this new Nuance system sounds pretty useful if I could just name an artist or song, SAT radio channel etc. These options have been in other makes for a while now. Also, now that we have a hard drive and I store music in it or use my iPod it isn't as convenient fumbling around searching for it.

Hey thanks @technic that is really useful info. I figured as much at least in the states since I haven't heard much buzz from 'hands on' experience. All the threads seemed to have the same iDrive/voice control my '09 has. Also as we see this thread pan out there is quite a bit of confusion since the engadget site claimed it would roll out in MY'10 models.
