HPDE/TrackDay Camera Mounting...

So without a harness/roll-bar, I've no way to mount my I/OPort camera mount in my 1week-away M3.
How do we mount the camera's for in-car action?
Thanks,
TomK

there's probably more vibration compared to a rigid roll bar mount, but it's very minimal. i have a canon miniDV camcorder with image stabilization and a wide angle converter lens.

i haven't tried it in my new M3, i built it and used it at track events in my old e46 330i. i'll test it out today and post a video.

I was planning on doing the same thing this week. Do you mind sharing the dimensions if you have them written down somewhere as that would save me some time? Thanks.

1" square aluminum tubing (home depot / lowes)
cut 1 piece 18" long
cut 1 piece 12 1/2" long

I clamped it together and drilled holes for the bolts (about 1" in from each end of the shorter piece). I think they're 2-1/2" long 1/4x20 bolts with washers and lock washers, and wing nuts.

I bolted it together, and then clamped the two pieces together, and used a dowel centering jig to drill the hole for the head rest posts in the center of the two pieces of tubing. The head rest posts are 5-1/2" on center, or 14mm.

For the camera mount, i bought an inexpensive one from local camera shop, i think it used a 3/8" by something about 1-1/2" long

For my e46, the head rest posts were small enough in diameter to allow me to slip some plastic tubing over them... the e90's posts are larger in diameter, so I'm going to have to open up the holes and get some larger ID tubing.

If you're looking for a better mounting system try

http://www.cruisecam.com/Mount_new.pdf

I think it cost me about $50, it attaches to the back of the seat onto the headrest posts.

It works great, here's some video I shot with it.

and on the track

Works great. I'll be using mine at Thunderbolt in Millville NJ this weekend.

I made something similar but instead of square aluminum tubing, I used wood, seemed easier to work with than metal. A good adjustable camera mount usually costs $20-30 alone. If you go that route and use a camcorder, make sure the mount is big/sturdy enough to support the weight of the camcorder and not start moving around given vibration and g-forces on track. But don't need to go overboard either.

But given the cost of all the parts for a DIY, for only $50, the CruiseCam mount sounds like a good deal. Isn't much more than the parts, and you avoid all the labor and effort!

It's $55 shipped. I just ordered one. Not worth my time to build one myself. Thanks for the reference.
