I apologize and don't want to take this off-topic from your issue, but do you have pics/info on his trailer setup?

I don't have pix, but I will e-mail him for some and post here. It's quite a clever little setup. Mostly hidden except for the small ~2" hole cut in the lattice-type rear fascia. I think he got the trailer kit from Northern Tool or something like that, had a wooden deck built, two vertical steel poles for a pair of tires each, and a bolted on plastic tool bin. Wired via the trunk. I'm still considering doing this...

...Of course, he has the Dinan Stroker motor to help tow it!

Very cool! I have done searches on the forum here and found threads where people asked about setups... but were just ridiculed and no real substantive information given in return That and people saying it was impossible with the stock exhaust... so I am curious as to see what needed to be done to make it work.

Track Trailer

Ok, here's the scoop on the track trailer. This is from my friend David here in Atlanta, who is a very talented driving instructor and a great guy.

"Below is a link to the kit I started with. The rest is all custom work that I modeled from someone else. It is a time consuming process but definitely worth it. Just assembling the kit took most of a day. Then you have to procure, fabricate, and install the ancillary components (wood platform, tool box, wheel stands, etc.). It's not especially hard, just a lot of steps so plan on this extending into several weekends if you do it yourself."

http://www.hitchhousega.com/

"Here’s a few things to think about:

· In addition to the basic trailer kit, you’ll also want to get a spare tire and rollable retractable stand from Northern Tool. The latter is nice but not required but you definitely need a spare tire. I haven’t had a flat yet but everybody with a trailer told me to make sure to get a spare so I’m passing the advice on. J

· The wood platform is ¾ inch pressure treated plywood cut to fit. I used a ¼ bolts with lock washers and regular washers to mount it tight. I also used a router to remove wood where the trailer kit bolts stick up above the plane of the trailer platform so that the wood can lay flat. You’ll see what I’m talking about when you assemble the trailer. If I had to do it again, I’d cut the wood larger to overhang the perimeter of the trailer. I’d also put some deck sealer on it too but I store mine inside so the occasional trip in the rain probably does no harm.

· The utility box came from Home Depot. It’s not really made to be mounted like this which is why I fabricated the metal straps you see on the inside bottom to spread the force of the anchor bolts. Large washers might work fine but we carry some heavy stuff so I wanted to be sure the box doesn’t rip off the platform. I frequently leave the trailer at the track overnight so the lockable latches are nice.

· The wheel stands are made of galvanized pipe and mounting flanges. I positioned the stands to accommodate larger tires so they hang over the sides a fair amount. I also drilled holes at the top of the pipes to accept locks; another nice to have when I leave it overnight. Also, the track tires wouldn’t bounce off while driving but the trailer spare might so you need something to secure them.

· As built, the trailer tows very well. It is not high so I still have good rear view sight. It tracks straight and corners very well. My car drives as if it is not even back there.

How fast can he drive with the trailer?

With my old trailer I found myself doing 95 before remembering it was back there. Even did an emergency lane change maneuver without a hitch (no pun intended). Now I wish I hadn't sold it.

He's got the Dinan stroker motor in his E92, so he can drive it pretty damn fast!

That's pretty slick. Do you have any pics of the actual trailer hitch installed? I am curious where he bolted it on and how much he had to cut out of the rear.

My friend did this, he never did end up telling me how he did it though. Maybe I'll try bugging him about it again? I now change tires before heading to the track since I just use R-S3's now, but if there's enough interest, I can try asking again.

^That's crazy! I'm picturing "Ben Hur" and the chariot races.

...looks like they each had a 12-pack at the drivers meeting!

Why would you change tires if you use R-S3's? Shouldn't those be good on or off track?

But really, because the R-S3's treadwear is significantly lower than the Invos I use on the daily. And the Invos have poofy comfy sidewalls, whereas the R-S3's do not. R-S3's are also noisier, and love to tramline like someone trying to use Godzilla's snot to fuse 2 opposing magnetic neutron stars together.
