Rare Look at BMW M3 Carbon Edition from China

Here's a rare look at the BMW M3 Carbon Edition. It's a rare sighting because 1) it was only sold in China and 2) only 111 units were sold in total.

The M3 Carbon Edition limited run model cost 1.23 million yuan (approximately $189,000 USD), went on sale in July of 2011. It joined the M3 Matte Edition and M3 Tiger Edition as Chinese-market only M3 editions. Its exterior featured carbon fiber roof, BMW Performance front lip splitters, trunk spoiler, hood inlet surrounds, mineral white paint, black racing stripes and Carbon Edition logo on the doors and door sills, as well as gloss black 19" Style 220 M3 wheels.

The interior featured genuine carbon fiber dashboard trim, each embossed with a "Carbon Edition One of 111" logo, white leather on doors and center console, as well as a white stripe and white stitching for the seats. The headrests also feature a carbon fiber patterned material.

There are no performance upgrades (unless you count the carbon fiber) to go along the cosmetic enhancements. Powering the M3 Carbon Edition is the standard 4.0L V8, matched to the DCT transmission.

IMO the "carbon edition" logo/design on the doors, interior trim and door sills looks very cheap... like fake Chinese knock-off products. Why would you pay $189,000 for that? I surely don't know (I do realize M3s are much more expensive in China, but still)

Besides the seats, I see M3's with this same carbon fiber setup all the time.

for $189K you would think they would do the OEM carbon center console and mirror covers too?

you'll have sticker shock if you buy a car in China. Every foreign brand is purchased with no discount or haggling, most go at a premium + taxes.

actually no most of the time you get discount unless you want the early batch, but yeah they kill you on other stuff like tax and license fee, license plate is around 14K USD in shanghai, it's ridiculous

things must have changed then...at least 10 years ago, there weren't enough luxury cars to keep up with demand.

I lived in China for 6 months and can verify they pay at least twice what we pay for cars. 100% tax plus many other fee's. With that said there are MANY real deal ballers in Shanghai and China in general. Being rich over there take a whole new meaning.

The Chinese drive like maniacs with no regard for human life. No such thing as a pedestrian having any right of way. Never assume an oncoming car will slow down let alone stop for you if your walking. With that said Shanghai is an amazing city and very un-Chinese. Only place i'd love to go back to in the country and I did a good bit of traveling.

Meh

Clearly market studies is at work here - in the U.S., charging a premium for this cheesy edition of the e92 M3 would be considered a joke.

EDIT: Realize that they at least pay twice what we dish out here in the U.S. Would still not buy this carbon edition.

^ read my post above. The price is a lot more than the cost of the car.
