It gets much better after 1200 miles, when you can really play with it. I would say at 5k, after an ECU mod, and after a track event, I was happy with the performance.

Are you saying that you didn't test drive an M3 before plunking your money down?

As others have said, the engines have different power delivery characteristics. In addition, the M-DCT trans doesn't have the torque multiplication off the line that an auto trans torque converter has.

What makes you think OP will get unbiased responses on e90post? True the 335 with a tune is slightly faster than a stock M3 in a straight but if I were looking to drag race I wouldn't have bought a Bimmer.

OP: I'm sure you just need some time to get used to the high revving motor. Save your judgement until >6500 rpm. However if you bought the car for stoplight racing, you've bought the wrong car.

OP here. Ok, so I knew I was going to get some "flavorful" responses when I made that post. To answer some of the posted questions:

Yes I test drove the car before purchasing; yes I did a lot of research; yes I understand what kind of car the M3 is; and yes my brain is bigger than my iDrive controller (ok I made that one up).

I was just curious if any other former 335 drivers had the same inital impresson when they made the switch. Could be that I'm just babying it too much but I'm just following doctor's orders. At any rate, I'm looking forward to getting through the break-in period...

Learn to drive....go above 4k rpm and keep it there. Otherwise the car is slow.

OP
You described the difference in power delivery in your initial post: lower rpm torque 335i v. higher rpm hp m3. It is what it is. As others stated, one would assume you realized the difference prior to purchase. Sure hope you enjoy your new ride; it's a whole new level of performance!

The M-DCT has a really soft clutch engagement from a stand still which does take some getting used to. In addition, if you are just using D3 during break in, the upshifts are at very low RPM's (speed).

Also, it is a bit difficult to take someone who chooses to call himself "weiner" seriously.

It's all cool guy. Congrats on the car. I'm somewhat new to the E9X too, coming from a pair of 650s. This may not be germane to your situation, but I found it took me a short while to understand just how much throttle to feed into the DCT. Initially, I was babying it a bit afraid of over revs etc. It took me a day to discover how hard one needs to work to accidently exceed 5500 rpm compared to the E46 M engine. Posters above are spot on in my view, keep the revs up and the car responds beautifully.

The M3 likes to scream. It's not a stump puller like a tuned 335. Break it in and then come back after you've had a few days of 8K+ of V8 screaming at you and rocketing you ahead. You'll change your mind.

The M3 is also a much better overall piece that puts power down a lot better. But you won't discover this until you experience the broken-in version.

Then, you'll want to (you wouldn't be here if you didn't) put in a pulley and an air filter, and Powerchip it. You'll never look back.

haha poor guy.. ^

anyways, my sister had a 335i. i also drove it a lot.. the 335 does feel faster BUT in the end the m3 is faster 0-60 vs 335. and with the 335 you get the occasional turbo lag. Also, the m3 is so well engineered (200 million calculations per second) that it runs smooth and fast where it feels "sluggish" but in actually you're faster than the 335. But im not saying the 335 is slower than the m3 at take off.. just saying its very well engineered.

btw congrats on the new car. i hope you love her and never ever doubt her again with her awesome speed + power. okay?

...Like that boy named Sue. You do have a good sense of humor. I'm convinced. You'll love your M3 once you're able to really use it.

Good luck to you. Welcome to M3Post.

No Sir. A simple tune like JB+/JB3/Procede Vx will not yield mid 12's @ 114mph. You need additional mods to reach M3 straight line performance levels.
