E92 M3 vs Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8

My buddy took delivery of a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track and I got a chance to flog it. For those not familiar with this model, the 2013 is a facelifted model with a HP/TQ bump from 306/266 to 348/295. Quite an improvement. Track trim gives you all the performance goodies like the Brembo Brakes, LSD, 19" Wheels, and Track Suspension.

Brought back memories for me since I had a 2010 3.8 Track and that was one of the most fun cars I ever owned. About 2 years ago, I was looking for a DD that had some respectable performance, relatively affordable, and good looks. Still new, not many people had even heard of a Gen Coupe, let alone seen one and that was part of the appeal to me. I didn't think I was going to enjoy the Gen Coupe that much, but it was a blast. Looked at the Infiniti G37 and the Nissan 370Z and liked them both, but the Gen Coupe was really the best of both worlds, plus a ton cheaper. The Track trim gave you every possible option in the car from leather, to touch screen SatNav, to Heated Seats and Bi-Xenon Headlights. My friend was in the same boat as me in looking for a DD with the same requirements and after taking my suggestion to go check them out, he chose it over the Mustang GT. The new 13's are pretty darn quick for the price (loaded is about $33K). I believe a few mags tested it to 60 in 4.9 seconds and the the 1/4 in the low 13's. Never took mine to the track. It drove more planted and stable and felt more expensive than the price you pay. The biggest complaint I had with mine was the hard plastic interior on the dash and the fake leather steering wheel but it was quickly forgotten after reminding myself how cheap my lease payments were lol. Other than that, I was suprised to have a solid car with no squeaks or creaks. Seats were comfortable, and visibility was on par with our E92 M3's. Coworkers and friends couldn't believe I was driving a Hyundai. No regrets getting that Gen Coupe. I'm sure my buddy will enjoy his as well.

If you have a kid that is looking for an affordable car, yet has some peppy performance, go look at the Gen Coupe. Stay away from the 2.0 Turbo as they are god awful slow...

EDIT: I still visit the Gen Coupe forums from time to time, and they all have so much respect for our M3's over there.

Here is a picture of my retired 10' Gen Coupe:

Obviously this is not competition for an M3 but surely it would do nicely against a stock 135 or 335 coupe at the strip or around the track. And for a lot less $$$$.

It doesn't look good but it doesn't look bad either. Kinda meh.

They are more comparable in performance to an E46 M3, and still not as good. Much less responsive, lighter steering, slower.

My buddy has a modified Genesis with headers, mid pipe, intake, tune - 310whp. It's a great car but you are getting what you pay for. "G37 light" or a good car for a son of a dad with an E92 M3

It's a decent looking car for sure.

What's killing me is that even this car has a better looking brake set-up than the M3.

I'd take working over looking. Saw one these out last week at Blackhawk. Nice car, looked pretty decent out there, but think the subaru brz or the scion new equivalent have a better presence. Great values out there though.

I agree, but as prices on the M grow larger, so must it's cosmetic looks.

And an 80k M3 NEEDS at least a 6 piston set-up in the front.

I agree. It was hard going from the red brembos to the stock black calipers of the M3. Even my friends noticed that my "brakes weren't red" anymore lol

At the end of the day, it is still unfort a Hyundai....I think most of the planet still not ready to embrace the stigma of it all. I thank god everyday I can afford to waste money on things like BMW's :-)

Haha I got the same questions. Def miss having some red brakes! Got more compliments on them than anything else!

The new 2013 Genesis Coupe looks good on paper.. all the specs are upgraded compared to the older car but damn the front end looks so ugly now.

How is that even possible? Was the Hyundai modded or did the M3 driver shift at like 5,000 RPM?

Hyundai has bolt-ons. M3 was an E90 bone stock.

I've seen 13.4 and consistent 13.5's. I'm sure with a good launch and crisp shifts, 13.3 wouldn't be out of the question.

That's kind of like people saying our M3's arent mid 12 cars, but I've seen 12.4 and 12.5 all day long with ours.

Looks like a consistent high 13's car. The previous 3.8 was low 14's

Although it's not the Genesis Coupe, I do have a Genesis Sedan R-Spec. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the car when I first stepped into it. The options it came with, along with the 429hp V8, are a steal for what they're selling the car for. Definitely a nice contrast to my E92 M3.
