M snobbery

First time getting a loaner after dropping off for service...got '11 328xi...I was starting to get desensitised to the power of the M but damn for 230hp, 328 feels really slow...dunno, I guess I've never seen the appeal of base model bmws since the leatherette isn't that nice either. And I can finally hear what the difference is with the premium audio i have in the M...much fuller sound.

Ok...few hours and the fat steering wheel shall be back in my paws.

Newer navi is nicer though cuz I got '08.

Performance wise yea I think the base models are a a bit sluggish not just compared to the M3 obvious but to others in their class. That being said it is still a BMW and has a great handling and feel. I'd take it any day over an Audi or Acura.

I actually like the leatherette. Something about it feels more "sporty" to me than buttery leather. I agree the new iDrive is better but people that use it as a reason to justify upgrading to a new model (or spend the money on a retrofit) are nuts IMO. I didn't buy the car for iDrive. I don't even use it much.

totally agree. I have an 08 as well, and I love the new i-drive nob and the new navigation system, but I love the M3. the 328 is okay, but I fall in love with the M3 all over again after I drive a 328

What a surprise, another "I got a 328 loaner and it sucks compared to my car thread".

Be glad you got a BMW loaner while your car is being serviced.

Same here,

Last winter I had a fully loaded 328i xdrive loaner for few weeks. It had all the creature comforts of my M, leather and all. The handling was pretty good and after a few days I got used to the power (or lack of it). It was winter and only used it for DD . God forgive me, at a point I even wondered if an M is that necessary...

When I got my ///M back, it was like "what the f#*k was I thinking"!!!

The M3 rocks

But the 328 is still a pretty decent car.

+1 about getting desensitized with the power.

I've had several "extremely" high hp cars (1,000 hp) and I wasn't expecting the M3 to really take their place - I just wanted something that I could daily drive and enjoy more than just for nice weekend events. So although it's not crazy fast, the M3 is just so balanced that it actually performs better than you begin to think it does. That is until you get in the family suv cross-over - then you get a wake up call and it's soooo nice to get back in the M!!

Rev the thing and use sport mode to control the gears. Gotta make that 328 work.

Your main complaints seem to be cosmetic and fixable with simple upgrades/mods. Like some others, the 328 inline 6 has always felt plenty peppy to me.

I use to own a GTI vr6, which at 174hp felt faster than the 328? 328 was auto so maybe that makes a difference in the feel as well. maybe I just expected it to be a bit quicker?

Anyways, I'm not complaining about the loaner, it makes me appreciate the additional work that goes into making the M line.

OP - These are the biggest assholes you'll ever come across in your life. Be careful abt what you post lol. I refrain from posting on this forum. M3 owners are real dicks.
Haha, I'm not a M3 owner, at least not any more. Maybe in the future.

You're very presumptuous...

Well said. Of course they are 2 different orbits. I had a 328i loaner for a mth and the minute I got in to my commuter (335d) I was saying, "Hellooooo..." (sports pack etc).

Then I thought to myself: "self indulgent arsehole." (not directed to OP).

I need to post a comp of M3 vs 335d: both great in very diff ways

Have a 335i xdrive dealer loaner right now, the M's at the dealer for repairs.
I too like the idrive upgrade but miss my supple steering wheel and M power. Car is quick enough to put most traffic behind it easily but I find myself stomping the gas pedal to do it.

be glad you got a BMW as a loaner.
During the E36 M3 era, I used to get a smelly-ass, dirty-ass, little hyundai or some other brand.

My DD is a 2008 Audi TT 3.2. It is actually fairly peppy and handles pretty good and is fun to drive. However, when I fire up the M3 to pull it out of tha garage, the cold start up paired with my Akrapovic exhaust shakes the house and I realize how much more car the M3 is.

Now if it would just stop raining everyday here I could experience that more often

I still remember riding in a 5-series, back in like 2001 and thinking "gee, this isn't even as nice as my Volvo. I've seen more luxurious Camry's!".

Try disabling an Audi's servotronic (640 relay pull) and putting performance tires on it. Yes, you can actually get steering feel in an Audi.

I still sometimes wonder if I'm not crazy to trade up from my modded Audi. In fact, I'm seriously thinking about at least keeping it for winter duty.
