Canyons safer than HPDE events?

Just saw this crazy video over at onehotlap.com. Apparently occupants survived, fortunately. Reminds me, though, of that recent thread over in the general section in which a member debated running the canyons of Orange County, CA, as a possible "safer" alternative to doing HPDE events at the track. See post #8 in the following thread.

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=722551

Video courtesy of Christo Tinkov over at onehotlap.com:

Jeremy Foley and his co-driver go off at Pikes Peak's Devils Playground - at exactly the same spot another car fell off the cliff last year. Both were taken to the hospital and fortunately released without life-threatening injuries.

Just keep in mind that at an HPDE you get corner workers and an emergency crew standing by just for you!

Holy Shit! And they lived!!! Fortunately for me, there are no canyons only tracks around here. Stick to tracks, shit happens, and tracks allow "safer" shits than public roads... Wow!

No way it's safer, it is much less safe.

That might just be my new motto!

Luckily this is a sanctioned event, so the driver and co-driver enjoyed the benefits of a full cage, fuel cell, race seats, harnesses, and HANS devices...

I wonder if they had blue tape over their lic. tags? Nah, I guess they need a little more than that. Wow, I think that I will stick with HPDE.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Worth every penny too. They were air-lifted out, but with minor injuries. It was a crazy weekend.

They were still very lucky... a large rock could have easily poked through the many open areas in the top of the cage as the car rolled down the mountain and killed them.
