It's standard on them all. Porsche has done the same thing with the updated 997 in order to reduce wear on the clutches in the PDK transmission (the Porsche equivalent of the DCT). It was probably cheaper to just include the feature across the board rather than only install it in cars with a dual-clutch.

One of my favourite, yet overlooked feature of the new M3.

It's one of those things where you wonder why it wasn't done sooner. The E46 M3 could do it, but only if your car had SMG. In a place with ridiculous hills and slow traffic (San Francisco) hill assist will save you so much wear and tear. Especially if you're forced to reverse up a hill, that's the worst.

Same as SMG in the e46 m3, just hold the - paddle for 2 secs and it will hold the car.

You have to press the footbrake quite firmly to activate hill assist. Initially, I found that the car rolled back on gentle slopes. Now, I make sure I press the brake firmly on gentle slopes.

Guys, I am amazed you would consider using heel and toe for hill starts in MT cars without this feature. Here in Europe where we all learn on MT cars you are taught to use the parking brake to start on a hill. You would definitely fail your driving test if you did not do this, or if you rolled backwards at all, and everyone continues to drive in this way. H & T is only used for changing down under braking.

BTW, my understanding of the way it is done in Porsche PDK is different, although I have not driven one yet. I think that in the Porsche system the clutch starts to release when you take your foot off the footbrake - whereas with DCT the clutch does not start to release until you touch the accelerator. This means that the Porsche would prevent the car from rolling back by having a part engaged clutch rather than from holding the brakes on. Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

haha... hill assist rocks... save me worrying about stalling the car whenever i leave the office and return home while i wait for the gates to open. oops!

Nothing worse than being laughed at by people when they see an M3 getting stalled. (Unfortunately its happened 4 times since i had the car but it all good now)

It does bother me too. I forget about it and then apply too much throttle on startup.

If you then turn off you car the brakes will still be applied and if your rotors are still really hot, you'll warp the rotors. This is analogous to using your e-brake after doing laps. I found this out the hard way to the tune of $2800!
ebrake on bmw's is a little crappy drum brake on the insides of the rotor hats... shouldn't warp the rotors even if they are hot.

hill assist will though.
