Test drove a brand new M3 with a couple more guys, and they beat the crap out of the poor car right off the bat. I clearly saw the tach hitting the limiter at 8K+ over and over, and no way the car had 30% less power either.

What the OP must realize is a NA engine like the S65 with a stratospheric redline, there's not much going on at break-in rpm. Once you go over that, it feels like a different car indeed, but it has nothing to do with the service .

I'm a Certified BMW Technician and I can tell you that's all BS.

When I was still at the dealer we didn't "unlock" anything nor was anything reprogrammed during the 1200mile service.

Change the fluids, reset the lights and call it a day.

Exactly. When I went in for my 1200 mile service, I had to tell the service manager what was supposed to be done and he had to confirm it on the computer. Dealerships arent the perfectly oiled machines the OP thinks they are.

Verified at the same setting as before: NORMAL. I like having a longer throttle range.

That's really true. And part of the beauty of this car. It's Jekyll & Hyde nature is why it's such a brilliant road car.

I noticed a major difference after my first service.

Not because of "limits" in place, but because my driving style dramatically changed.

Just had my 1200 mi service done. Same car, same power, just now I can drive it like it was meant to be driven.

My service writer told me the same thing when I brought my car in for the 1200mi - "oh boy, we'll free up some extra power for you!" I just ignored it because - why even correct him and get in a discussion.

...they then went on to NOT change my transmission or diff fluid (6 speed).

It really is pathetic that BMW dealerships, at least in the US, don't know much about one of their marquee products.

If I had a dollar for every piece of incorrect info I have gotten from the dealership about my car I could buy gas for a long time for it.

I had to explain (argue) to/with the service manager how to service my car for the 1200 mile service. I actually had to produce the service bulletin to make them change my tranny fluid. It is truly sad how misinformed many sales and technical people for that matter are in this industry in general. It isn't just a BMW problem by the way.

They expect that most people don't know the difference and the fact that most people probably don't is the only reason this continues to manifest itself.

One of the service writers at my dealer is a former club racer and seems to "get it." 1 out of 5 ain't bad...I guess...

Just like a BMW salesman told me six months ago that there was no such thing as european delivery and that the M3 would be discontinued by now.

Or like I had a Ford salesman tell me the BOSS 302 had the exact same engine as the GT and that it didn't make any extra horsepower.

My SA is a drag racer and tuner at least, so I can communicate with him well and out customers are always informed with 100% honest facts, no horse poo.

I'm really sad to read these stories of dealers. Seems not many people take their jobs seriously.
