Exclamation First day back from vacation...

And I get a(nother) reckless ticket
God damn trooper was hiding in the bushes in a spot where I have never seen a trooper
It's the same road I take to work everyday, so I know where to slow down for the police
It's on old dominion right before it intersects with 123
I was following this truck that was doing 20 in a 35
So the minute the road splits into 2 lanes
I overtake the truck, not paying attention to my speed, as I was paying attention to my driving.
Just as I pass the truck I see the trooper hiding behind a small tree with the speed gun over his eye, and he waves me to pull over
64 in a 35
Last reckless was October 2010
I think my points are -3 now (was 0 before my last incident)
Will take the online driving course
That adds 5 points
So at least when I meet the judge I can say I meant well and already took the course, and I'm at +2
Will get my driving record and see what my current status is

Good news
He didn't give me a ticket for no front number plate
But I recall on my last reckless (where I also got a no front plate ticket)
That he could not get a speed reading my car with lidar because he could not point at my front plate, so he had to use a different method (can't remember what it was)
So how did today's trooper get a reading without a front plate?
I'm thinking maybe if I sell my car, and take the driving course, I might get off easy

You don't need a front plate to do Lidar reading? The systems so easy a caveman can do it....

Do fix-it type tickets count against your driving record in VA?

They can get you with laser on any reflective surface. They are usually trained to aim for you plate or your lights.

They make VEIL which is kind of like paint that you put over your plate and lights, here's some test results;

So is speeding. If you're going to break one law, why not protect yourself.

I don't speed in ffx, I've herd to many horror stories about cops, once even jail time for doing 80 on I66.

As far as protecting yourself; I think they confiscate your illegal equipment and fine you $400? Or so I've herd. That could be quite expensive

LI- $1,100
V1- $400
Ticket- $400
Volunteering to be the one to drive into VA, priceless. Lol

I think the best protection in VA from a $1,000 reckless ticket is having an out of state license.

Radar detector or laser jammer in VA is just a defective equipment ticket, $40. They do not confiscate your equipment. In fact, if it has a serial number on it, they just write it down and hand it back to you. Otherwise, they impound it, but you get it back once you cop to the ticket.

Last time I got a reckless ticket, it was reduced to excess speed, but I had to take the on-line class (which is hard!) and hire a locally-connected attorney to make that happen.

I actually see cops running a trap at that spot from time to time (near the Dominican Retreat entrance) but I'm used to them doing it with RADAR, not LIDAR. Does the ticket say LIDAR?

Was it Fairfax County police (the station is less than a mile from there) or a Virginia Trooper?

Oh, okay, that's Fairfax County motors, which focuses heavily on speed and traffic enforcement, and they have been using LIDAR for years. I re-read your OP and you said you saw the LEO with the unit over his eye - that means LIDAR; he or she has to aim it at you with a scope on the unit.

Sorry about your bad luck. It sounds like you're not a "reckless driver" but were in the wrong place at the wrong time for a second.

went to court
$250 fine plus $83 court costs
no lawyer (of course)
so that's 3 reckless and 1 speeding
not in jail yet
and it's BS that you need a lawyer for reckless

but now i'm -11 points
will take the online driving course for +5 so i'm up to -6

Did you get it down to speeding or did they peg you for reckless again?

I was charged with reckless when caught going 73 in a 40 earlier this year on GW parkway (it was 3 in the morning and I got lost and thought I was on the highway). Long story short I went to court without a lawyer and the charge ended up getting reduced to speeding probably because it was my first reckless charge.

Good luck with your insurance.
