I don't know if I'm missing something or if I just had a long day but let's say I want to adjust the front height with this setup... I would then have two options for doing so? Either spin the lower spring perch adjuster or spin the whole strut body? Or a little of both?

Please post a review once you have this kit installed. I may have to just bite the bullet, this is the perfect setup for my needs.

heh, neither. You'd have to disconnect the lower fork and drop the arm out of the way and either remove the fork or spin the lower adjustor there. The locking collar is really only there to make sure the shock body doesn't turn and inadvertently adjust the ride height while turning/etc

Spent all day at Bimmer Performance Center watching Dan install the kit. Even helped a little here and there

My pictures are hardly instructional, more of like random shots. I apologize for that.

The kit:

Stock front with H&R lowering springs:

Stock rear with H&R lowering springs:

Work in progress:

These things are a bitch to put back right. A little bit of sticky tape to hold the washers on the inside of the under-tray help a lot:

Struts out:

Using spring compressor to remove old spring and mount new one onto the new assembly:

And back in:

Rear was a bit more pain. Dan had to loosen the exhaust so springs and stock shocks could be removed:

Rear spring assembly:

Cut dust covers:

Removed old springs/shocks:

And new stuff goes in:

First impressions after alignment.

Since I am going to do HPDE @ VIR next weekend, I set initial shock adjustment at 7 clicks from stiffest (which is what manual recommends as track setup).

I drove the car like that on the bumpy roads I am used too, and all I have to say is wow. The car feels stiffer, but less harsh. I can feel the bumps, but I can feel that they are absorbed without upsetting the car. Turn in is amazing. Mid-corner stability too. Biggest difference can be felt in the rear going over bumps and crests mid-corner. Car used to be way to bouncy there. Side-step a lil and just feel nervous. Now it feels 100% composed. There's no detectable body roll. Far less than with OEM EDC shocks and H&R sports lowering springs. No detectable squat on hard acceleration out of corners.

Quite frankly from 35..50 minutes of driving it today, I am tempted to leave it like this (7 clicks from stiffest) for daily driving. That also makes me wonder if perhaps at the track they might be a tad too soft. But I'll know next week.

Overall, for street/twisties .... THIS IS A CLEAR WIN. Comfort and performance are both there and far better than OEM. Love it.

Forgot to add. Ride height as setup per Ohlins manual is about 10mm higher in the front than H&R sport loweing springs. Still looks amazing, but it's nice to heave a little clearance back.

Nice installed photos!

Here is a photo of the Ohlins R&T for E46 M3 for comparison. A great way to decorate a boring office with some fine art!

Did some more street testing. My noob conclusions are below. I welcome comments and corrections/suggestions to my analysis.

It looks like there are 25 clicks up front total. And whooping 30 in back. All click counts in this post will be counted from stiffest setting. Overall clicks are very apparent and get progressively harder to turn as you turn them clockwise (stiffer). I like how adjusters feel a lot better than yellow Konis I had on my E46 M3 in ground control package.

At anything softer than 15 from stiffest, car takes a while to settle as it goes over bumps/crests. Even when doing DD commute, it just feels soft and bouncy. If I understand things correctly, that is because springs are overpowering rebound dampening levels. Seems like half the shock range is not applicable to E90 M3 with this particular spring set. Is that common?

15 - 7 clicks is suitable street range. With 7 being for nice smoother twisties and 15 very comfy daily commute. I have them set at 10 now that I use all around for DD. That gives me best compromise between rough pavement and good high speed corner handling.

During DD or spirited street driving, at 15-11, you can feel some body roll. It's very minor. At 10 - 7 there's virtually no detectable body roll.

6 and stiffer is definitely track range. While at 6 car is still less harsh than stock EDC + lowering springs, rough surface and bumps become very pronounced. The whole car seems to follow the road surface perfectly and in full control, but to a driver on the street that feels like a lot of up/down motion. It's not harsh, just a lot of movement. Despite all the motion, it settles almost instantly. In smoother road sections and high speed twisties, it's pure bliss.

VIR HPDE this weekend. Hopefully 0-6 clicks will be enough I did notice that things got exponentially tighter as you got closer to full stiff. So I suspect 0-6 is actually a larger range than it seems, just not as precisely tunable if it had more clicks for same range.

I concur with your settings analysis and comments.
I also settled at 10 clicks for street driving and find this to
be perfect happy medium. On the track I liked full stiff the best
and thought it performed much better than stock EDC.

I'd be interested to drive a more track orientated setup to know
how the Ohlins R&T compares. I don't think I could handle much
stiffer ride for DD on the street and R&T seems like a good compromise.

This is a fantastic analysis! When you dial back the rebound/dampening are you keeping the front and rear ends equal? Meaning -5 front, -5 rear? It will be interesting to see your front and rear relation once you get more seat time. Sick!

I am keeping front and rear equal for now. It was not very obvious during my street driving if front or rear had more pronounced effect. I think they are pretty darn balanced front to rear at equal clicks.

This is how it sits at ride height recommended by Ohlins manual:

Car did great at VIR. Ohlins R&T performed excellent. I settled at 1 click from stiffest in back, and 2 clicks from stiffest upfront. My take on it is that on street this suspension is superb. On track it's very capable for 3..4 HPDEs a year. But, if you are putting seats/cage into your car and taking it to that level, I think the spring rates might be too soft for more dedicated track car.
