BPMSport Enhanced Cold Start Rev Limit Protection v2

Normally our cold start rev limit protection limits RPM to 4,500 and gradually releases the redline back as the vehicle warms up.

We've had a number of requests to hold the 4,500 RPM limit until the vehicle is full warm as illustrated in this video.

The video was taken with a beta version of the software. The final release immediately releases the redline when oil temperature reaches 176F.

We're always interested in catering to custom requests and improving our features and service enabling you to get the most of our of your car. Anything that affords your M engine more protection is something that we'll always be interested in!

This is cool and something that I would have been interested in for sure. Just curious, can you get some videos of hitting the gas to ensure that it's actually limiting the RPM's? I only see the warning indicator holding and then dropping off as the temps warm up.

I have the previous version of this (which progressively moves to redline as it warms up) and it's a hard limiter.

Have it and like it. Much better than v1 for accomplishing the intended purpose. Only concern I had was that it makes it a touch more conspicuous that the car is tuned than the "slow creeping" version, an issue that may or may not be relevant at this point.

Already out! Members such as FogCityM3 requested this and have been testing it for awhile.

Also, we haven't had much time to post about it, but here is a look at the extended temperature protection we've modified in the software:



How to read this graph:
The bottom axis is oil temperature in Celcius, and the left axis is engine RPM Limitation. This particular file has a raised rev limiter to 8,600 RPM. You can see that once coolant temperature exceeds 145C, the redline reduction begins. When you hit 146C, the RPM limit drops to 7,200, at 150C, it's 6,000.

The stock programming is the other line, except the axis reads 150-155 instead of 145 to 150 (BMW reduced the protection from 231E to 240E software, allowing the temperatures to rise 5C more before any reduction begins. We've changed it back to how it should be, limiting the RPM sooner.

To translate this into real numbers from stock protection to enhanced protection (and for this illustration we'll use an 8,300 redline max):

Stock reduction begins between 150 and 151C. At 151C, you'll be limited to 7,800 RPM. For every 1C rise, the RPM is reduced by 200 RPM, meaning at full reduction (155C), you'll be able to rev to 7,000 RPM.

Tuned reduction begins between 145C and 146C. At 146 the RPM is reduced to 7,800 RPM. At 147C, the reduction is to 7,200 RPM. 148C, 6,800 RPM. 149C, 6500. amd 150C 6,200. So while the stock programming lets you rev to 7,000 RPM with a 311 degree oil temperature, our software will limit RPM to 6,000 RPM if oil temperatures reach 300F.

Depending on time, I might post a graph illustrating this which takes into account the axis change.

I'm also thinking of potentially reducing this even further, as those are really high oil temperatures. Take this same principle of protection, and also apply it to transmission oil temperature as well as coolant temperature. We've enhanced the protection for all of the fluids. It's likely that your redline will be restricted quite a bit before reaching 300F with our extended protection - because the coolant temperature reduction or transmission temperature reduction may kick in first.

Absolutely. Here is a video I took a few minutes ago to show this. Unfortunately the car warmed up a bit too quickly - I did not have the opportunity to downshift to first to show that it will not execute the shift.

For DCT Vehicles, the transmission will shift as you approach the restricted redline and will also reject downshift attempts which would cause the RPM to enter the red area. Shiftlight functionality is also different to reflect the reduced redline.

On manual vehicles, the RPM will hold at the red limit and the control unit will not allow engine RPM to exceed any red shaded portion. Once the vehicle has reached operating temperature, the full redline is available for use, and the shift lights and shifting patterns recognize the unrestricted redline.

176 Degrees was chosen because this equals 80F, which is considered fully warm by the digital motor electronics unit. Most vehicles have thermostat settings and other functionality built around this value.
