should i trade e90 for e92?

Hey folks,

I have a 2011 E90. I never really enjoy looking at my car from rear. I like
E92 better. The car is a dd I know sedan will be more versatile and more practical. The thing is I use the rear doors to put my stuff, food, bags, I hardly have a 3rd person in my car. Whenever I see an e92 m3. I just think damn it looks more aggressive and more like a M3. Sporty lines and sporty rear. There are way too many E90. Maybe I should just wait for F32.

Look at it this way, your e90 handles better than an e92.

Also, there are a LOT more M3 coupes than sedans. In addition, while marginal, the sedan gets around the track slightly faster than the coupe. However, if you're concerned about the rear end look go for the coupe. Hope it's worth the many thousands you'll lose in resale (depreciation plus taxes on the e90 - you can recoup some of the tax but lose most of that in higher depreciation if you trade the e90 in on the e92.) My guess is this will cost you at least $10k to make the switch (your call as to whether it's worth it.)

Me personally, I prefer an understated sedan that teens aren't trying to race in their coffee-can exhaust Civics/WRXs/Etc.

I constantly think about this, and may end up doing the same. It's a case of the grass is greener on the other side scenario for me. The coupe is slightly sexier, more sporty. The Sedan to me, looks like the more muscular brother of the coupe. If I make the switch, I will curse myself every time I have more than one passenger or when my kids get older. The sedan is more convenient, can't really dispute that.

Despite being a coupe owner who rarely uses the backseat, I find myself wishing that I had gotten the E90 M3. Here are my thoughts on why I now wish I had gotten the E90

1) Practicality - Even if I don't use the backseat, having rear doors makes life really convenient for things like golf clubs, bags, track tires. The coupe is also good for overall storage space, but space is less accessible in that you have to fold down seats, push seats forward, etc.

2) Friends - Having an E90 would have made it easier to share the joy of an M3 with friends more often. Despite having comfortable back seats, the E92 does not match the practicality of the E90.

3) M3 Philosophy - The M3 is the jack of all trades. Having the practicality of 4 doors is the icing on the cake IMHO.

4) Looks - I actually love the bulldog stance of the E90. Though it is hard to argue with the beautiful shape of the E92.

All this said, I still find myself doing double takes when I park my E92 because it is an absolutely gorgeous car.

Having two E36 M3 coupes, when upgrading, I decided to go sedan. More practical, and I was reaching the time period where the space mattered. Not to mention the coupe's back seat was useless.

I personally think you have to do what makes you happy, but would the $10k depreciation versus $10k in mods be better? I would certainly think so. wheels, exhaust, maybe a SC system...or cosmetic mods to differentiate your sedan? Sure would be more fun to me.

Personally I see myself keeping this sedan longer than I could ever justify a coupe as I get older.

Have you considered a Vorsteiner or Challenge trunk with the integrated curved lip? I think that makes the rear look a lot better and a lot cheaper than trading it in. Add a rear diffuser and it would really look better than a stock e92 or at least as good.

Just wanted to bring up a subject matter that hasn't been discussed for a while here on the forum...considering E90 M3s are not real M3s (evident by the fact there's no M3 stamp under the hood), you should go for the trade.

You should get what your heart longs for ... be happy I always say so yes do it the e92 has great sporty lines and as you say how often do you have a third indevidual in the car.

As for your stuff, a cargo net is cool it holds all or most of your stuff, then there is always the rear seat, so easaly accessablle by simply flipping the rear of the front forward.

Good Luck, remember those words "Follow your heart and be happy"

No M3 stamp on the hood?! Darn it! I just recently learned, thanks to the genius at my local fast food drivethrough, that the m3 actually has twin turbos and not a V8 as I've been led to believe!

Seriously, just keep the e90 and get the new M3/4 when it goes on sale. But if you're very unhappy, then I say go for it

The E90 M3 looks best from behind imo, but if you like the E92 and you rarely have passengers in the back then go with the E92 and be happy..

it's a scientifically proven fact that E90 M3 drivers get more attention from the opposite sex than their E92 brethren. but hey, if you can't handle it, please go ahead and swap it for the coupe
