Ignore all the sophomoric comments. BMW offers the 6 speed manual transmission as standard on the M3 and an optional M-DCT transmission (DCT = Dual Clutch Transmission, or DKT in German). The DCT does not have a torque converter like typical automatics do, but also does not have a clutch pedal like manuals. It uses a two clutch system in which switching gears is controlled by a computer.

You can put the DCT M3 into one of five automatic modes and it acts just like a standard automatic. This is what you want if you're thinking you want an automatic. But the DCT also has six manual modes. You will want to try this. You don't need to use a clutch pedal (it isn't there), you just shift. In addition, you can upshift and downshift with paddles behind the steering wheel when in manual mode. That is, you can command a shift manually without ever taking your hands off of the steering wheel.

SenoritaAVA welcome...read up on the MDCT its a manual gear box that works like in a "auto mode" since it doesn't use a clutch (as in third pedal)

The simple answer is yes, it does come in auto, but the design of this automatic is new to BMW, and appears to be having some teething problems. If it's convenient, I'd wait at least several months for BMW to straighten out some of the bugs before purchasing the auto.

I give you this advice because it appears that at least some people on this forum are having problems that are definitely safety related. Far from everybody (quite a lot of folks report no problems at all), but enough problems that I think it's a crap shoot at the moment.
