dkg software udate

sport auto says there will be a software update wich improves upshift speed and the change into backwards gear. nothing was mentioned about downshift or any lag problematic.

i test drove a dkg car last week and was not happy. i had the downshift issue on the autobahn while braking from 240 km/h to 180 km/h (far away from abs area)

much more annoying and also dangerous was the fact, that if you go close to the rev limiter e.g. in 2nd or 3rd gear and then change into next higher gear first of all the acceleration stops, then you have a lag and all of a sudden the system hammers in the next gear...i do not want to have this in wet conditions

i called bmw m to ask whether these problems will be solved with the next software update cause i ordered already a car with dkg...they recommended to wait one year... so i changed back to mt

That's just great Anybody picking up their car this week having second thoughts?

If BMW is telling people to wait a year, maybe we should cancel the orders until next year!

Was it an 08 or 09 you drove?

If this original post is true, that's quite a bombshell. I don't want to doubt that BMW M is telling people in germany who call them, but I can't imagine corporate anything telling people not to buy the product now.

What would the ramifications be if someone did get in a serious accident with a M3 ? A DCT, and the car stalled or had a lag.

I am a very happy M-DCT owner, and sure there have been like 3 glitches in several months of driving. Nothing that ever put me in harms way. BMW will make things right.

Just enjoy the car, and enough with all the negativity

All this makes a good case for leasing the car. I'm not sure that I want to own all this suspicion and questioning. But it would still be fun to "borrow" from BMW!

I think a software update will come out soon and all the problems will be solved.

This sounds pretty hard to believe. Who did you speak with at BMW? Or, for starters, what phone number did you dial?

First year cars always have glitches, best to wait until late second year, or third year. Yes 6MT would definitely be the way to go right now, IMO. 70K large is just too much money for these kind of issues, all though thats just the nature of things with this tech.

BMW will sort it out in time, hopefully not too much time.

I'd be more worried about a physical (non-software) change in the DCT that is characterized as an "improvement" not a "repair" and, thus, won't be applied to the existing cars? Sort of like a SSG, SSGII, SSGIII progression. Maybe the 2010 car will just have DCT II and that will be the end of it.

That scenario strikes me as extremely unlikely. There is a always a possibility for small internal changes over the years, but I would not expect anything that would change the behavior of the transmission. At most it would be changes for better durability or reliability.

IMHO, the prospect for "DCT II" in the lifetime of the E9X M3 is basically non-existent, and especially not a mere two years after the original debuts.

This whole thing sounds a little fishy to me. I too would like to know who at //M recommended waiting a year.

Anyone else with DCT experience the OP's shifting anomolies? I'm not saying it didn't happen, I'm just thinking this was an oddball occurance under unique circumstances.

I have also had the same problem. I have to pull the trigger at 7500RPM so DCT will change gears at 8400RPM. I think all DCT owners have this issue. I hope a software update will fix the problem. I'm pretty sure it could be resolved with an update. Shifts are lighting fast its just they shift a little late from pulling the trigger to actual shift.

Not really.

I have had some issues, but not those the OP speaks of.

Edit: I should point out that I have had ignored downshift commands....but they were NOT under heavy braking or at high speeds! This happened while just "normally driving" the car.

Right but the OP said "the acceleration stops". My car isn't broken in yet so I can't comment on high RPM behavior, but certainly in my experience so far I've never had the car stop accelerating. Like you say, the shift itself happens very fast so there should be no gap in acceleration.

I too have had the acceleration stop as I was trying to shift right at or just below 8400 rpms. I have noticed it only once as I rarely redline my car on the highway. To keep constant acceleration, you must shift around 7500rpms, as someone mentioned previously, to keep the engine from basically stalling out at 8400+ rpms. Despite this one time, I love the M-DCT and would still take it over manual anyday.

Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner.

This stalling out, as the OP calls it, is almost certainly running up against the rev limiter and is operator error, not a transmission issue. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I think we can write this thread off.

It never happened to me "yet" (not even once and I hope it will not) but I always use the shift light indicator to guide me when to shift. There were times that it will not shift gear but all of them were operator error (mine) not pressing the pedal brake before shifting from N to D/M.
