Thinking About Grabbing a 4k TV Soon? Better Read THIS First!

I actually happen to be considering a replacement for my current 80" 1080p. I am NOT in a emergency or anything, but, I am a HUGE Home Theater guy and Techie! So as I have been researching possible replacements, there is a particular technology and acronym I am seeing repeated: HDR - High Dynamic Range (not to be confused with 4k!)

HDR is the biggest industry buzzword (buzz acronym?) in TV since 4K UHD TVs were first introduced. HDR allows a TV to display a much wider dynamic range of brightness levels, achieving deeper blacks and much brighter whites and colors. Many in the industry feel that HDR represents a more noticeable improvement to picture quality than 4K UHD resolution has since its introduction.

Been saying for years and years that extra resolution is not gonna fly as it is VERY difficult to pump into the average household and that we should be looking at improving the actual image quality.

Good post tx thanks. I'm reading tv reviews nightly and have decided to wait a year or so. Sometimes it's hard enough to get consistent 1080p content never mind anything better!

What's your opinion on 3D in a home TV by the way?

No gimmicks bruh. 4k is actually more of a "gimmick" than HDR. May want to research it a lil more before making such a broad sweeping comment.

Now if you don't require the "best of the best" then there are plenty of good and solid options available still.

Well said. And this is EXACTLY why I did NOT buy a 4k TV last year when I could have. To truly get the advantage of a 4k TV, you will have to sit VERY close up to notice ANY improvement over 1080p. Fact! As you move further away, the effect/advantage diminishes significantly.

I am blessed to still have 20/20 vision at the age of 45 and 3D has ALWAYS bothered me at the theater and in home. So it is never a consideration when buying a TV for me. So I am biased on that.

Yep. I go to people's houses with MASSIVE tv's that we are sitting 6 feet from, it's bloody awful.

I am no videophile BUT I did buy the last of the last of the Panasonic Plasma's, hardly a boutique item but the image quality in a dark room is superb.

HDR or not, OLED is the biggest jump in image quality you can do right now and will likely be more important to quality than having a set capable of displaying HDR content. You don't need "deeper" blacks with an OLED set because they display a truer black, i.e., an un-illuminated pixel. It's leaps and bounds ahead of LCD displays when it comes to image quality. I'll reserve judgment on how dramatic the change is with the wider range of color.

No matter what there's always going to be some new feature or resolution coming down the road. It's how they support their market and get people to buy new televisions. I don't really see a point in waiting for an HDR compatible set, especially if you can afford an OLED right now.

I agree with you. I have been considering a new TV for a while now, but can't find anything that had a picture quality better than my 2011 Samsung plasma... within my price range at least, lol.

I'm glad TX brought this subject up. I was leaning hard towards a 4K to replace my plasma, but haven't pulled the trigger because the difference in picture quality just wasn't "improved" enough to justify the purchase, when my plasma still give off an amazing picture.

This thread just saved me from making a frivolous purchase this winter. I will do some research on this new technology.

granted, not much content you can get in 4K anyway.

you sit far enough away from the screen, you can't discern the pixels anyway. same effect with having a high PPI phone in front of you.

i entertained the idea of getting a new TV, but the recent selection is shit poor. EVERYTHING is either some BS "smart" tv or has that 3D gimmick nonsense. whatever happened to having a normal huge-ass display. thats all i want.

Don't know what it's like in the US, but over here it amazes me when driving through some very deprived areas....awful houses in disrepair, obvious poverty, probably nobody in the area with a job...yet all you can see shining through the windows are bloody HUGE TVs. Priorities, and all that

I have no interest in 3D at home, yet have enjoyed it a few times at the cinema. It's novelty factor really...

What's your top pick for a 75" under $2500?

I'm not into spending $10k for the latest tech when last year's is more than enough. Basically I found Vizio 4k and Samsung 1080p and 4K LED TVs in this range.

I, too, am into a big screen with good quality picture. I don't need all the add on features even though I'll take 'em if they are included.

I can honestly say that my top of the line 60" LG Plasma that I've owned for a couple years and is now boxed away in storage, the PQ with it's 600hz refresh rate outperforms my current set. BUT the sheer size of my 80" led can NOT be denied! Games and movies are immersive.

Every time I think about replacing the main TV with newer technology I realize I don't want to spend hours on TV research and feel like I can't buy anything without researching most current technology. So, I still have my 50" Pioneer plasma from 2006.

I jumped on the last gen of the pioneer elietes Still to this day I think the picture is better than anything else Ive seen. Darkest blacks and most realistic color.

I'm curious how HDR would really work with the regular programs.
I have top of the line LG 65" OLED but I honestly don't see anything special when I'm watching my regular tv shows. Only time I can wow at it is when I browse 4k videos from youtube that has very vivid contents. Movies and what not, unless you are watching a transformer, it all looks the same.
