Lexus IS-F or BMW M3 WITH DCT LAG?

The M3 was my obvious choice, but with all of this discussion of the M3 having been plagued with its dct lag, i really dont want to have any headaches. The IS-F'S transmission to my knowledge has not been reported to have any lag, although i really like the BMW styling over the lexus. My question is, Is the M3 still worth getting over the is-f even with the dct lag issue? Thanks

I would get the M3 over the IS-F still... better handling because of lighter weight. In the track, you wont even notice the lag when using S5/S6.

The IS-F doesn't have lag since it uses a torque converter.

I strongly prefer a manual over an automatic, but if it comes down to the M3 DCT or the Lexus IS F........I would take the M3 DCT.

Now if you compare the C63 AMG against the M3 DCT, I would take the C63 AMG. I've test driven the M3 DCT, Lexus IS F, and the C63 AMG......And I liked the C63's automatic best.

If I were to get an automatic, I'd get the C63. It's a mind-blowing vehicle.

i was really impressed by the lexus, i find the m3 feels slow by comparison. but its road feel is unparalleled and its aesthetics are superior. I would take the c63 if i were looking for a four door auto.

Have you driven the M3 DCT? You should do that and verify this lag headache.

I say the M3 since there were a few posts here that state the lastest DCT upgrade fixed the lag issue. Here is a link to one of them...

If you follow all those reviews, they ranked the new M3 ahead of the competition. If you don't follow those 'so called expert', try it yourself. If I want a smooth ride I will just get the Lexus ES300 but if I want a performance car, then M3 of course.

I've driven both, my close friend used to have the IS-F (now he owns the M5).

M3 is the one you should get.

ps. Once you deactivate the DSC you won't have the lag issue. I believe it's the traction control unit, not the tranny.

I have the Lexus IS350. I know it is not the F but I see some refinement over the M3 in some ways. I feel the M3 is a great handling car and may not be the fastest of the group (F, C63). It really depends on what you are looking for. If you want the fastest 0-60, I would probably go with C63. If you like driving twisty roads, then the M3. If you like nicer interior and more luxurious (and a bit more reliability), then the F. However, I don't think they are upgrading the Nav system on the F, only on the IS350 convertible, so I would wait until they do the hardware upgrade.

Nice episode. M3 sedan with 6 speed and crazy launch almost going sideways also killed the IS-F in the drag race by 2 - 3 car lengths. However, Jeremy said that the IS-F eventually wins due to a higher speed limiter at 169 mph in the IS-F.

I drove the M3 DCT at the BMW performance center and I didn't notice any lag. I have a 6MT and I am pretty sure very few drivers can match the speed of the DCT shifts.

The shifts are fast.

Just got my 2009 M3 coupe and can't notice any lag. I drove it in Germany and Switzerland including windy roads for 2 weeks too. No lag. Been reading about the lag for a while and tried to replicate it to no avail. Fingers crossed.

Agree.

The IS-F uses an adapted version of LS luxo-barge transmission.

If you are in M mode, which you would use on the track, it disengages the torque converter. The car acts like a true manual at that point, only upshifting downshifting when you shift. The only exception is that it downshifts as you come to a stop to prevent stalling. There is no lag whatsoever.

Really different cars. You need to drive em. I know typical but it's the truth
