Post M3 CSL by 2010. Possible reveal at 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show

AutoZeitung reports that BMW plans to unveil the M3 CSL at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

This is cut and pasted from Motor Authority:

"Since the new E90 series BMW M3 was revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year, true BMW enthusiasts have been intrigued, but waiting for the CSL to come along. Standing for Coupe, Sport, Lightweight, those three letters name the most track-focused and pure driver’s cars BMW has to offer. News of the new model is beginning to leak out, with reports claiming it will be on sale by the beginning of 2010.

As the name suggests, saving weight is the focus of the M3 CSL’s performance regime. Carbon fiber and carbon fiber reinforced plastic are used extensively to achieve the goal of shaving 100kg from the base car. From the front fascia to the roof to the rear diffuser, center console and door panels, the CSL has spared almost no expense in its quest to achieve lightness. Even the radio, air conditioning, navigation and heated seats, among other optional accoutrement deemed unnecessary, have been deleted to save weight.

Light weight isn’t the only thing that separates the CSL from its standard M3 cousins, however. A fully reworked suspension, a 50hp (37kW) increase to nearly 470hp (350kW), and stickier tires on special wheels all combine to offer real-world performance improvements. According to Auto Zeitung, Nurburgring Nordschleife lap times around 7 minutes, 45 seconds should be expected, and the price should slip in just below the €90,000 ($143,000) mark.

All of these tweaks add up on paper, too, with expected acceleration times of 4.5 seconds for the 0-100km/h (62mph) dash and a top speed around 300km/h (186mph).

The last BMW M3 CSL was built in a limited run of just 1,400 cars between 2002 and 2004. Such tiny numbers make the CSL an exclusive offering, and only the most dedicated opt for the extra expense and somewhat harsher and noisier ride characteristics of the car."

From a performance stand point, not worth it at all! There are cars that will out perform it for less.
Only $143,000? Tottaly worth it!

But for die-hard fans and potential collectors car (depending on how many units produced) it might be.

It'd be such a cool base to build an amazing M3! Then again, full CF Amuse bodywork, and a thorough weight savings job would get you a long way to getting close to the mark set by the CSL.

I wonder how they're getting such a big power boost?

Few cars above $100,000 are worth it from a pure performance standpoint as the GT-R, Evo and Corvette readily address.

Interesting read. Knowing that BMW underestimates performance numbers and the E92M can run 0-60mph in 4.1sec (4.7sec BMW estimate), it wouldn't surprise me if the CSL runs in the mid-to-high 3sec to 60.

Sounds like a lot of unsubstantiated speculation to me. And poor at that. I think it would hit 62mph in under 4s if it had that kind of power and weighed 250lbs less. Also US price would probably be $90-100k, not $143k, if they sold it here.

Who said if it would sell for $143k if it were to make it to the US? Does the M3 sell for 70000 Euros here? We've beat those direct currency conversions to death.

This is just magazines guessing this or that. All pure speculation. And I thought we had some real news when I saw the title. Their guess is as good as anyone's here. They even have a ring lap time estimate!

We'll see it when see it...

Another CSL speculation based on the Autozeitung report. We're still not a single step closer to the production of the CSL. Some say the CSL will be built, mostly some of the (in)famous BMW creative marketing team, while other say CSL was cancelled. I tend to believe the latter.

Best regards, south

I can tell you one thing, if my company continues to go in the direction it is going I will be available to afford it and I will get it and keep it forever. I can see myself one day owning one of these and a older GT3. Awesome.

This from today, cut and pasted from egmcartech:

"BMW is working on the next-generation BMW M3 CSL which will arrive with the updated 2010 M3 model year. Like its predecessor, the new M3 CSL will drop all the standard equipment to lose weight. So that means no radio, no navigation system and no air-conditioning.

BMW will also drop a lot of weight with the extensive use of carbon fiber in the front apron, hood, roof, side panels and rear bumper. Like the old CSL the luggage compartment will be made of extremely lightweight cardboard.

Of course, you’re all wondering what’s going to be under the hood. According to AutoZeitung, power will come from the same 420-hp 4.0L V8 engine of the standard M3. However, the ‘M’ division will make some mechanical changes to extract an additional 50 horses for a total of 470-hp. 0-60 is expected to come in well under the 4.5 seconds of the standard M3 with top speed rumored to be around 185mph.

The 2010 BMW M3 CSL is expected to make its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show with sales to kick-off in the beginning of 2010. BMW will make only 100 units of the M3 CSL with pricing estimated at less than 90,000 euros ($143,176)."

Not sure how valid, or invalid any of this is. I am just posting these as general interest. I have absolutely no intention of buying one of these if they materialize.

Noted.

A rehash of the other, both cite the same source, and that source is almost certainly 90% speculative. Also, if they only make 100 of them, they will be marked up to 1 beeeeelion dollars in the US, if somehow they were to make it here in the first place (which I doubt).
