I am 1" away from getting a new M3

Hi guys,

I live in Canada. I have been lurking here for a while, only because I wished I had a M3 but don't.

But I am now this close to an opportunity to grab a 2011 E92 M3! Hence I have a few questions to ask for your opinion before:

#1 My current daily driver is a 350Z with 268 lb-ft of torque. M3 has around 30 more torque, but it also weighs nearly 400lb more. The car will be used a daily driver, will I complain about lack of torque?

#2 Straight line acceleration isn't what the M3 is all about. That said, a stock M3 is still faster than a stock 335i(s) in a drag, thanks to more aggressive gear ratios, right?

#3 2011 M3 comes with the start-stop engine function. I know it can be defeated by pressing a button, but do I have to do this every time I start the car, or can I permanently disable it in some kind of setting?

#4 This Canadian 2011 M3 comes with everything except BMW Apps Package. Does this mean I will have that 850 (?) watt audio system?

#5 I can purchase decent quality aftermarket LED angel eyes to replace the stock yellow ones, right?

I will likely think of more questions later. For now, if you guys could pitch in and help, it would be greatly appreciated!

1. The nature of this beast is it likes to rev. That said, Almost everybody here DD's the car without a problem That's the point of the car. A car that's usable in the streets and hauls the family, but also hits the track afterwards.

2.The 335iS will have a bit of the advantage till around 3-4rth gear. The M3 starts pulling on it after that.

3.You can defeat Start Stop. I am not sure what the Canadian version is like but I believe it turns on after every start-up.

4. Not sure.

5. Yep. You have a lot of options available to you.

It would be a pain if I have to turn it off every single time. I heard it takes a noticeable amount of time for the engine to come to life after it "deactivates" at the light.

I am 28 and frankly I really shouldn't be jumping 3 feet high off the ground for getting a new car.

But this new car is a M3.

So FUCK YEAH, I am not going to contain my excitement!

The default is off, at least in the U.S models, so you've nothing to worry about.

More importantly, thanks to more horsepower? lol

Love the 335is but, how do you figure it has an advantage till 3-4th gear? M3 is faster 0-60, 1/4mile, everywhere.

The start stop defeat will just half to become another step #7 in the rediculous ritual that goes like this (after you get in the car)

1. Put key in slot (I don't have CA)
2. Put on seat belt (otherwise you'll get the chime when you start)
3. Tap the iDrive knob to make the legal screen go away.
4. Depress clutch pedal
5. Press the starter
6. Tap a preasigned steering wheel button to turn off the iDrive display

If the list makes it to 10, probably time to think about some other car.

I hope the Canadian car to be the same with US car when it comes to on/off for start-stop.

But is it true that I have to deal with crap like "make the legal screen go away" and "turn off the iDrive display"?

I just want to find out if I would feel a decline in the feeling of torque when driving the M3 compared to the Z.

Z = 3400lb, 268 TQ
M3 = 3800lb, 295 TQ

I test drove a M3 before, with 2 other passengers, that's like 180lbs x 3 of weight. At that time, the M3 didn't feel very fast off the line.

But no, I am not taking the C63 over M3 because I want a more balanced, refined driving experience.

Something tells me you're gonna be really mad if a tuned 335i spanks you at the light. You're better off getting a merc or anything with a hemi.

Edit: just saw you mentioned that you wanted a balanced car, so the m3 might be the best car for you, but if you're already worried about the things in your initial post, then you might not enjoy the m. Do yourself a favor and go back and test drive the m, again. This time, drive it by yourself to see if you're making the right choice

No I wouldn't. Because of 2 things

1) I am not a 18 year old flamboyant racer with a 16" long twinturbo penis that often suffer from HFPF.

2) He may drive a BMW. But I have a M3.

That's what I thought too. I think M3 goes from 0-60 in 4.4, not sure about 335is, but I know it isn't as fast.

The m3 isnt faster because of gearing. It's after because of the motor. Gearing plays a role but it's not WHY. also, the torque is not low. The torque is just higher in the rev range. Feel the car at 8400rpm in 2nd and tell me what u think. The 335 motors lose so much power after 5000rpm and are just built for daily driving. No thought was put into it when it was being developed. The M has great balance, suspension, engine, comfort and all out usability. Buy it if you can. Don't pass up the opportunity.

I am getting 13L/100KM on the Z. From what I understand, M3 could go up to 16L/100KM.

Such is the price to pay to have the last NA V8 in a M car. So be it.

I guess it all depends on how far you rev the engine. But this so engine is designed to be revved, so.
