I just went to the Red Line website and read their tech article on Water Wetter. According to them, Water Wetter does NOT need to be mixed with distilled water before use and CAN be added directly to the radiator or overflow tank. You just have to add the correct amount depending on the volume of the cooling system.

Water Wetter is also compatible with the type of coolant that is used in BMW's (Ethylene Glycol).

I am not endorsing the use of the product, just wanted to post what I found. Use the above info at your own discretion.

That's interesting considering their own bottles require a mixture with distilled water.

Good find.

The electric fan will kick in, the water temp will be fine but the oil temp will climb dramatically.

If the oil cooler was purely supplemental, it wouldn't be there.
There are plenty of cars with no oil cooler..how does their oil get cooled? From the main radiator and cooling system obviously. I don't understand what you mean by if it were supplemental it wouldn't be there. Perhaps a dictionary would help with the definition of supplemental.

interesting thread. dont we use 10w-60 for a reason? the multi-synthetic compound allows for higher temps without breakdown. id suspect if we used 40 weight there would be concern, but the rule of thumb ive heard for 10w-60 is that its safe to 300F.

I remembered this thread today ( mainly the 275 part) while driving in stop-n-go traffic as well as a little highway after. My temp never went past 210 and 210 is about where the temp always goes even during winter months. You can see it was toasty outside also and the weather.com site claims humidity was around 50% at the time.

My oil got up to 132C @ a spa track day yesterday. above 125C oil temp the water temp starts to go up to 107C. I'm looking for some more oil cooling. maybe take out the LF wheel arch plastic oil louvre thingy and change it to a aluminium mesh of more airflow and clean the oil radiator... Anybody have some info on a oil thermostat change?

This is my next excuse when I get pulled over. "I'm sorry officer, but I haaave to drive this fast in order to keep my oil temps down"

after 30 minutes of spirited driving (shifting at 5k and hitting 8k few times) not even on the track, mine passes the 210 mark..never got the overheating warning..I haven't started driving it nasty like that till about 5 months ago so basically it was winter time, I'm wondering if I continue driving it like that during summer's 100+F temps what will happen?? will see I guess

Most engines do not cool their oil by transferring heat to the engine's water jacket and then to the main radiator. They loose it through conduction and radiation at the oil pan. In high performance engines this is often not enough, a larger volume of oil is used and a separate rad for the oil is added. Cooling fins may be put on the oil pan as well.

In fact most of the parts in an engine are not cooled by the water in the main rad, just the major castings (block and heads). The moving parts are essentially cooled by the oil which drains to oil pan where the heat is lost.

question. why is that we would get freaked out when temp reaches 275 when the 328i's normal temp is @ 250? and takes FOREVER to get there...does a v8 have to run cooler than I6?

No offense, but my first question to you would be: WHERE WAS THE NEEDLE? To be at 275, it'd have been between the dot at 3/4 of the gauge and the 300 mark. Was it there ? I'm sure you'd have gotten the overheating warning; it's too high. Not normal.

Wrong understanding . It's just oil temperature. You can't combine them man. Coolant temperature usually reaches normal (190º) within a mile, while oil takes about 5, but once at 160ºF, you can safely have fun. And oil temperature is always higher than coolant. If one goes up, the other one as well, but the confusion is most people don't know the coolant temperature gauge is BUFFERED, meaning it won't move until coolant temperature exceeds 235º. Reason for that is most owners would be at dealers every other day thinking their cars are overheating . Motorcycles are not buffered, and you can watch the coolant temp gauge (those equipped) constantly moving, just like the oil temp. gauge. On my BMW bikes, coolant temp. needle gets close to redline before fan(s) kicks in; a llittle unnerving the first time . Hope this helps.

No offense but if you didn't exceed 220 on the track you weren't really driving it very hard.
