I have a 997 GT3 (well, my spousal unit claims it ) and I would buy my C63 again over the M3, just like I did a year ago.

I need to get a pic of them together one of these days.

Whys that? Is the C63 the daily driver or the fun car? I assume daily? I have yet to drive a C63, I guess the torque/added power is just that much more satisfying?

Last time I checked, the AMG was automatic. I know Mercedes is either working on, or has released an SMG type tranny, but I'll take my 6MT.

well with the c63 its more of a daily comfort car... so i can see why he didnt want the M3.. he has a gt3 for sporting use...

M3 is kinda inbetween those 2 cars imo.. leaning towards the c63 side of course... so if you can only afford 1.. go with the M....

Obviously the world is full of different people resulting different opinions. I try my best to understand how others can have the opinions they have, but this is one (in relation to a comparison with the M3 as per the original post) I can't possibly understand.

Over the past 5 years, I have driven a 996 Targa and a 997 C2S. I am getting an M3 coupe because I need a more practical car with a useable back seat.

Having driven both 911's and the new M3 extensively, in my opinion, the M3 is 7/10 the performer that the 911 is (and appropriately, about 7/10 the price).

Under 5000 RPM, the M3 feels slow; the 911 has noticeably more torque in the lower RPM range, which makes for more fun throughout the daily driving range (and better fuel consumption as a positive side effect).

The lower ctr of gravity in the 911 dramatically improves grip in turns. It feels like a go-cart compared to the M3.

The 911 has considerably more traction, and applies its power to the road better than the M3 does.

The 911 has WAAYYY better steering feel.

It is not as easy to drive a 911 fast. (The best way to appreciate this is to track a 911 and a Cayman back to back. The Cayman is much easier to drive - you don't feel the rear weight bias fighting your normal instincts. With practice though, the 911 is a more rewarding drive. If you don't want to track your car regularly and learn how to get the extra performance out of the 911, a Cayman really is a better choice.)

The M3 is a good compromise to me, but I am going to miss my 911.

Those are my $0.02

Never drove a Porsche, but have driven a 430. I am ecstatic with the performance of the M3 E92. The engine truly is a marvel... it revs so free and easy up to redline, it's a ton of fun.

Maybe the Porsche is "WAYYY" better in some areas, but (and this is totally subjective) I just can't stand the 911 body, nor how I fit in it, no back seat, and the fact they are a dime a dozen around here. I can imagine the steering feel being better than the M3, but I have not been able to break traction on the M3... not that I have tried real hard though.

Anyway, I think BMW did a brilliant job on the car. Internally and externally the car is built well. At 4500 miles, it's just getting better and better every day.

Sometimes I do want more luxury and confort when using the M3 as DD, the M3 is still a 3 series, it has rattles and not all part of the car is of high quality. Then I think to myself, at least the car looks dam good and perform pretty well performance wise. So I might get the M3 again when choosing a DD.

you M3 owners with rattles must have a different vintage than my 09 e92, cause I have experienced zero rattles or any noises whatsoever, save one left front speaker which buzzed a bit during loud bass notes, but the dealer fixed that in with a new tweeter.
Otherwise the fit/finish I have been very impressed with.

most of these cars are at least 20-130k higher. i don't know how many people cross shop these cars. i really love the continental (my fav.) the cayenne gts is fun DD, the 997tt is everyday GT and gt3/rs is track toy.

the m3 is a bit of all of them. but if u can pull away those cars, get the GT man. i love that car. GIAC chip and u got a locomotive in ur hands.

Oh how our opinion are so alike.

Especially the experience of the Cayman vs 997 on a track. As a car you can simply jump into and drive reasonably close to it's limits the Cayman is probably the best track car for the ordinary man, the 997, especially in rwd form requires much more practice to get right.

You may feel that the 997 is ultimately the more rewarding but in my opinion tracking one is a bit like playing a round of golf, you string a few shots together and you feel on top of the world, only to slice your next one and bring you back to earth with a bump, well that's the pot luck you have taking corners in a 911. It's best to still approach it was a smooth driving style of slow in and fast out, try to man-handle one, even to recent ones and you best be bloody quick witted.

Give me a Cayman any day on the road, it's much more balanced and manageable, especially equipped with a LSD and it's got every bit the steering feel. The only thing missing in my opinion is the kudos of owning an icon and the price tag to match.

Sometimes I WISH I had gone with MT but I do a lot of city driving and it would be a pain in the a** I've done tons of exterior mods on the car and absolutely love it except for the DCT issues. It's all round fun to drive, I can fit people in it and all my endless shoppng bags too. I was going to go the Porsche route but there are tons of them in my area and besides I didn't want a 2 seater and I don't mean to typecast but I tend to see guys and girls for that matter who have major attitude and seem to buy them for the name and not what they are capable of doing on the road. FINAL ANSWER, I'm glad I have this car, it's super fun to drive.
If you're in S5 and downshift manually to second it really helps minimize the lag, at least in my experience. I pretty much always drive in S5 for the throttle blips.
