Is anybody that is using 0w-40 tracking their car?
Is this oil ok for the track? It seems a lot of you guys swear by the 0w-40 but i am wondering if its fit for track use or i should keep using TWS.

The 0W40 mobil 1 will be fine for the track...... Keep an eye on oil temps and all will be well

If you go back to the thread (in this sub) from a month ago about using 0W40, there were at least a handful of people that used it on the track and actually found that the engine cooled down faster after hot laps than it did on TWS. I think at least one guy was going to report back after his next oil change. Check it out.

There is no data on the long term benefit or not of using Mobil 1 0W40.
Using it is a gamble on BMWs ability (inability) to choose the correct oil for their engine. |

Yes. There were a couple of guys who said the oil pressure was still within spec while using M1 0w40 on the track. The temps were actually a bit lower than with TWS, so it's win-win.

Once past operating temp, I can also confirm that 0W40 cools down faster than 10W60. So when you reach 230-240, it'll come back down to 210F faster.

Hmm i wonder about the life of 0w-40 after track use. I can run my car on tws for 5000k intervals with around 6 track sessions and my oil analysis comes back ok. I hope someone running 0w-40 can let us know about how its holding up after repeated track use.

That I can't really comment on to be honest, but IMO, it's only $55 for 10 quarts so I have no problem changing oil more regularly.

Although the Castrol Edge pro 10W60 does shear down quite quickly to a ~50 weight oil, after that it is extremely stable, it has a higher HTHS than Mobil 1 0W40 and a higher Ester content. Of all the environments that a lighter weight oil *might* be beneficial I would have though a high temp high load track day was absolutely not one of them. |

If Porsche is smart enough to spec M1 0w40 in their new GT3, which revs to 9000rpm and put down 475hp...wouldn't you guys think the oil would be more than enough as far as hot track temp and high shear condition go?

That's not the point. The question was whether the M1 0w40 was a trackable oil which of course is yes. Certainly the castrol 10w60 is as well so I am not sure what you are getting at.

Do Porsche owners also think they know better and track their GT3s with a 0W20 (or some other lighter weightl) oil?.....I'm betting no. So why wouldn't BMW M division also be smart enough to spec the best oil for the M3 knowing that it will see track usage? Its not even like Mobil 1 0W40 is the only oil that can withstand track days. Castrol market the Edge Pro 10W60 for use in "highly tuned and loaded engines used in competition and track day applications." Its used in endurance racing and touring car racing and even in the new Lamborghini blancpain super trofeo race series. Its an oil with plenty of motorsport heritage. For me the logic is; track time will see higher temps and consistently higher loads on the oil film. Higher temps in the high load areas will already cause the oil to thin and this effect will only be exacerbated by starting with a lighter (than OEM recommended) weight oil. Its interesting to read on Nissan GTR forums that owners are adding Castrol Edge Pro 10W60 to their OEM Mobil 1 0W40 for track days to make it more robust. This at least makes some sense. |

Ferrari has since switched everything to Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 (Shell Helix Ultra outside of the US). I don't know why people are comparing totally different engines to the S65. Apples-to-oranges. These oil threads make my head hurt.

M1 0w40 is a streetable race oil. Mobil even markets it as such. It is totally fine for track use and is actually a spec racing oil for several series.

There was a memo released for North America that people can't agree on. Some believe it says you can use any LL-01 oil (which Mobil 1 0w40 is), whereas others think it says you can only use TWS.

In that case, we should be using Ultra 5W40 instead of M1 0W40 !!!

Interestingly BMW NA pulled that oil list from their website a while ago.
