Wheel damage and tpm malfunction
Okay, here is the story. This past Friday I was on my way home from work. It was a long week and I was looking forward to the weekend. All of a sudden I hear the warning gong. I am like, WTF?!?!?! I look between the speedo and tach and I have a low pressure light. First thought is I only have 1800 miles on my car and I probably have a nail. I pulled up the vehicle info and the right rear tire is the culprit. I stop by my folks house to borrow their gauge (wife had my gauge). I checked around the tire and sure enough there was what looked to be a nail. I borrow a neighbor’s compressor and topped off the air and went home. The TPM warning light went off one the way home.
Saturday morning I take my car to Discount Tire for what I was hoping was a minor hole that could be plugged. After waiting about an hour, the car was ready. Of course, there was a small nail in my tire. They plugged and patched it. I asked how much and was told free of charge, just bring the car in if you need an alignment, etc. I explained the BMW warranty (not even sure if it covers alignment) and that I would “call” if I needed anything. Next stop, gas station. As I was pumping gas, I notice how dirty the right rear tire/wheel is compared to the others. I look even closer and I see what looks like scratch marks on my wheel. As I mulled having to go back and deal with this I drove around for about 5 miles. I pulled the car over in a vacant lot and examined the damage again. After a few minutes, I decided this definitely needed to be addressed and drove back to Discount Tire. I told the asst mgr what happened. He looked the wheel over and wiped some sort of chemical off and found even more damage than what I saw! He did not expressly admit they did it but did not say they didn’t do it. He gave me his card and said he would be in touch. I said okay and thanked him for his time and left. I met my wife at the mall for lunch and on the way home I get another warning gong. This time it is tpm malfunction! I remembered I forgot to hit the reset (the low pressure light never came back on after I added air Friday evening) button. I hit the tire reset button and it went through the reset process. By the time I got home it never finished. I checked the manual and the reset will start/finish the next time you drive the car. I am really pissed off at that point and did not feel like being bothered. The asst mgr called later that afternoon with the information for one of their vendors to assess the damage. I asked him the name of the company and he did not know/remember. I was supposed to call the wheel repair guy on Sunday and decided to wait until Monday as I was not driving the car that day and had not drove it since I returned home Saturday afternoon. After all, I was not excited to work with a vendor of the company that just damaged my wheel. I start the car this morning crossing my fingers the malfunction warning would be gone. It was not. I drove to work and it took about 15 minutes to reset and I still have the tpm malfunction warning. I called the dealer and I am dropping the car off in the morning. Also, I think I am going to get a quote from them on repairing the wheel. After I called the dealer I called the repair guy. He seemed okay and claims he is insured. I asked if he was licensed and he did not respond with an immediate “yes.” He said he had the required business license to operate in the county. I have not googled the name of his business yet and plan to this evening. The entire process for him to get an estimate and repair the wheel sounds suspect. I am not saying it is but something just does not seem right. On top of that, the only guarantee he could give me was he has been in the business for 30 yrs!! Anyway, I think at the end of the day whatever tech that plugged/patched the tire was simply not very careful with the handling of the wheel from removal to the mounting/balance. Any ideas of what possibly could have caused the tpm malfunction? I think it is odd this happened right after I had the tire plugged and patched. Thanks in advance. |

That's why I'm hesitating to get my tire permanently repaired, but will have to do it before I hit the highway again. After powdercoating my wheels, Discount Tire also scratched one wheel, and had the nerve to say it was like that when I was watching the stupid tech f**k up in front of me (made a face, stopped the machine, checked the wheel, and looked to his sides -but not back- to see if anybody noticed). But that's nothing compared to yours. By the way, your 2nd pic is wheel rash, but 1st and 3rd is machine damage. The first is absolutely nasty. You'll need that wheel refinished, but will never be like stock, as the new finish is never as tough as factory. Costs about $250. Good luck.

Interesting. The fact they did not charge you anything indicates to me they simply plugged the tire without removing it from the wheel. If so, I don't see how they could have damaged the wheel, but I guess incompetence has no limit. If they did remove the tire, then they might have damaged the TPM, easy to do if not careful. It's always disappointing to see shabby service, good luck.

Apparently, the cause of the tpm malfunction was a result of a faulty RDC unit unrelated to the plug.
The dealership called their wheel guy and he never called them back while my car was there today. I guess I will have to follow up with him. |

I did not know they powdercoated but would not consider based on my current situation and the fact that others have had issues there as well. I would have lost it if they tried to deny it! The asst mgr pointed out the damage in pick 1 and 3 as I did not see it at first. I only saw the damage in pic 2! Yeah, the first one is crazy. |
