Did you follow the 1200 mile engine break In period rules?
Curious to see how many of you followed the 1200 mile break-in rules/limitations when your car was new?
Now that many of us have a lot of miles on our cars since they were new, I am curious to see if oil consumption has been affected by the way we drove the car during the break-in period. There seems to have been a lot of heated discussion years ago about BMW's 1200 mile break-in period for the "M" models, but many of us had very low mileage on our cars at that time. Now that many of us are approaching higher mileage and age, the long-term data is now available to analyze oil consumption... How did you break-in your car? What was your style of driving during the break-in period? What is your current preferred mileage interval for oil changes? How much oil does your car consume between oil changes currently? |

Followed the 1200 recommended break-in, then gradually raise the rpm every few hundred miles and redline around 7000 miles. 2nd oil change at 7500 and break-in done.
oil change interval at 7500 miles, oil level stay at max through entire change interval so no measurable consumption by the computer. |

Religiously followed the break in procedure. Car burnt at least 2 litres of oil between a 6k or 12 month oil change interval with TWS over a seven year period. Since changing to M1 0-40 holding up well and done close to 3k km and the dip-stick mark is at half way point. So despite being a thinner oil no marked high oil consumption. Time will tell.

Guess there are not too many original owners in here... I have the opportunity to relive the break-in period all over again with a new engine- so I am curious if people actually experienced more oil consumption by following the recommended break in procedure...
1200 miles just seems like such a long break in!! especially considering that there will certainly be some higher content of metal in that first batch of oil... Thinking about changing my oil at 600 miles instead of the 1200 mile mark... |

I followed the break in guidance exactly and then worked up to driving it like it should be driven over a fairly short period (couple hundred miles) after the 1200 mile service. I drive my car like an M3 was built to be driven and it definitely needs about 2 liters of oil (maybe a bit more) between oil changes which I do about every 7K miles. Very thirsty.
