I am 100% certain that the new iDrive will turn up in US 3 series models sometime during the '09 model year. I'm about 50/50 that they'll be released during September production.

For the record! I am so happy the 09s MAY not get the new iDrive. BTW those map graphic look SO MUCH BETTER than ours. I still don't understand why we can't eventually (2010ish) get a software upgrade.
PS-BMW can give a fuck who they piss off!!! They already made their money on us 08 buyers. And we will keep going back, pissed or not!

Did you read the thread? It is 100% 09's get the new iDrive.

Also, how miserable a life do you have where you temper your misfortune (which was avoidable if you did your research) with hope for others to experience misfortune also? Sounds like a real good way to stack up a lot of bad karma against yourself. Just MHO though.

Just kidding.

I had three posts in that thread. The first one only showed exterior E90 pics, the second one those of the E92 and the last bunch were interior pics of both E90 and E92 per big's request. Jason probably added these to my OP. Didn't expect this to cause confusion.

Aha, you were holding out on us.

So, since that is 100% now, do you know whether or not the new iDrive will be on all new 3 series/M3 from late September SOP? Or will it be phased in on some cars (such as the E92/E93) a bit later in the model year?
Not really holding out, these information lines are mostly spare unless someone doubts what car that is. These pics still are part of a German press release. My guess is though that with the reopening of the Regensburg factory in September all cars will get the new iDrive.

Best regards, south

Something about 3D effects in the navigation display. That's just one thing. Don't know if there was more.

Also a bigger screen size. The 7 series features a 10.2" display.

Best regards, south

7 series has more programmable keys, Heads up display, and no online owners manual (see page 68 from the pdf linked above)

It would probably be difficult to do it with aftermarket HDs. As the OEM HDs increase in size over time, it may be possible to do a direct swap.

I have a bad feeling that the "cutting edge" iDrive system, despite its updates, will still be worlds behind my 2 year old AVIC Z1 in terms of features and functionality.

One interesting point in the pdf is how BMW came to the determination that controls were safer and less distracting than a touch screen system.

Agreed. I've been spoiled by my AVIC for the last 2 years, and I haven't seen an OEM system that comes close. (Closest is the Lexus system from an LS 460) Hopefully this new BMW system will come closer without losing too much functionality/user friendliness.

However, I hope that some industrious owner will find the location of the oem HD. From there it would simply be a matter of finding a compatible drive with a similar RPM and a larger size, and cloning the old to the new.

As far as the touchscreen vs controls debate, I think the touchscreen offers the most seamless control, but it is very distracting.

US Spec cars in Germany -Anyone have any clue if the '09 M3 nav systems that are US spec will work in Germany? I just ordered a '09 coupe for use while I'm over here in Germany. Previously we just had to buy a European disk & it worked fine...not so sure about the hard drive based nav.
