Thoughts on f80 M3/M4

Just saw the specs on the new M4 and I'm seriously considering getting one. Wondering what everyones thoughts are.

Features that really impressed me were

- linear torque and power band true to the inline six lineage
- kerb weight sub 1500kg WOW!
- eliminating turbo lag with pre spooling
- auto rev matching gearbox for manual
- 7500RPM redline
- 4 pot front brakes
- no active sound BS like other M's

That's pretty much sums up my perfect M car

Tough call. No doubt it will be a brilliant car dynamically and the guys at M wouldn't have gone down the forced induction route if they weren't sure they'd be able to get a similar car characteristically to previous generation NA cars. This means, most importantly, getting NA like throttle response (no turbo lag as you point out)

I'd be putting down a few dollars to get in the queue then decide closer to the time. You'll have no trouble shifting it if you take delivery and decide it's not for you. These will be in hot demand once they arrive and you may even MAKE money selling it after a few 1k clicks.

Iam most concerned about the styling, not sure who the design brain is behind these new BMW designs - (can someone clarify) but I really am not a fan. Bangle was really hitting his stride with the last of his designs. The 4 series looks the best of the bunch but they all look too bulbous at the snout.

Not a fan of the new look...now if they bought back the bonnet bulge, bonnet vents and rakish flared wheel arches...then...maybe..

I think it will make the S65 motor a cult classic. One of the greatest things about the current e9X IMO is that it's a car you can be 100% happy with and not want to change, custom,,, yes, change,,, no. For a V8 fan a 6 is just not an option, with the new M4 you will need to go back to requiring premium audio.
My last M3 will be an E92

Until a test drive, it's almost impossible to predict how I'll feel about how the engine sounds, drives, etc. People put down the E92 in the beginning as well not knowing real-world how it would turn out - obviously those people ate their words. M seems to have done a good job giving each M era its own unique aspect to love that new or old models could not completely replace.

All I know is BMW has always made sure the M3 is the best in its class, and the new one is intended to hold the mantle again for another 5+ years etc. All the things like weight reduction, lightweight parts, more power/torque, overall refinements, all tell me this car is still on the same trajectory for greatness.

A lot of guys said the same thing about the E46 with it being the last 6 cyl...

Whilst I agree the V8 sounds great, the latest V8 in the M5 sounds a tad ordinary imo and a turbo 6 is a sweet sound (well the N54 is)

Horses for courses as they say

The current F10 M5 is a turbo charged V8 which is different from a NA

Yes I'm aware of that and I'm sure you agree it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the S65 (not all V8's sound better then a 6 cyl was my point so to speak)

You are spot on with that. S65 and S85 sound tracks are in a different league all together.

I know this is really off topic, but one of the best sounds I've ever heard coming out of a car... this thing is a brutal weapon

Having had a twin turbo Ls2 in the past my thoughts on forced induction is that it is great for the street but problematic for the track. I'd be interested to see how the new M4 tracks and deals with the oil temps that those turbo's will generate. My old car had two oil coolers and a heavy duty pump and the oil temp still went over 150C after three or four laps of Barbagallo.

Very interested. If it's anything as fun to drive as a C63 or an R8 V8 then I'm in.
Any guesses on pricing?

If you want alot of torque those BMW 6 cylinder diesels will get u oodles of it. So having higher torque alone is not enough to justify the new M4 as better. Fact of the matter is comparing the V8 e92 to the turbo engine in the F30 is like comparing orange to apples.

The V8 M was amongst the fastest NA V8 outside of the way more expensive 458 V8 engine.

As for the new turbo M4 it cant even keep up with a cheaper Nissan GTR nor a more expensive Porsche turbo. If the pricing point is done right the M4 can be a success otherwise I can't see this car doing that well in terms of sales. Ill keep my E92 M3 over the M4 and rather have a M2. I will be holding out for a M2, fingerscrossed if not then a M235i with LSD will probably be more fun to drive and able to extract the most out of the car during day to day commute.

Look at the track videos of the m235 and the M4, tell me that the M4 doesn't appear twitchy and fat around the corners.

Im not a fan of how the M4 exterior looks. The interior is very nice and I'm sure the performance of the car will be epic. Maybe the looks of the car will grow on me, the more I see it.

^ +1, spot-on ... Just my opinion, but the new M4 almost looks like a fat toad (especially the vert), just a bit too wide ...

After hearing about the engine review I think I will hang on to the S65 for a while. The new car has in-gear acceleration but supposedly lacks the immediacy of the S65, thus lacks the soul of an ///3 ... according to Autocar.

I like to hear what Chris Harris has to say. For me, long live S65. Hang on to it with your dear life.
