Is this possible?

My neighbor told me that he negotiated the following deal:
2009 M3 Sedan. Alpine Wht/Fox Red. Tech Package, DCT, Moonroof, 19" Wheels. Maybe a few other options. He's telling me the price he was quoted was $62,000 and with taxes and the other fees it will be $67K. Doesn't sound right to me on an ordered 2009 M3.

What do you guys think?

I think that would mean he got around 2k off... I find it a little hard to believe considering its an 09.

Pick from the following:

-Its an 08

-He's bullshitting

-Got lucky

Actually, it's more like $4K off, right? I built one online and it came to around $66K and change. So, with tax and fees he's paying a final price of what the sticker would be. He doesn't want to say what dealer cuz he "doesn't want everyone to get a deal." If you can't tell the guy is a tool.

I'd be curious to know what dealer it is (I realize he hasn't told you) as all the dealers in Chicago I have talked to aren't giving those kinds of deals on '09s.

$4k off MSRP has been done, and is do-able on '09s. There have been a few forums posts here that got 3k or 4k off MSRP. So believe it.

And
I disagree about the availability of such steep discounts on '09s. I've contacted several friends at dealerships around the country and they've barely given anything off MSRP (if at all). My guess is that those who are reporting 3-4k off are lying, and if someone actually did get it they were in a special situation to do so.

My best real world suggestion would be $1500 off MSRP as a stretch, with $500-1000 as a decent probability, and MSRP as a potential reality.

I just returned from ordering an 09 DCT coupe from my dealer and, after all the extra fees etc...still ended up getting $4510 off MSRP. After taxes and everything, I'm paying less than MSRP.

This is my first car purchase from the dealer and I do not have any other special relationship with them. I e-mailed and asked and that's what they came back with. I didn't bother to do much haggling, but I did get them to throw in some floor mats (no big deal, I know).

But, these deals are possible. I got this one with, frankly, not too much effort.

The original poster's neighbor may still be a dick though...

I am seeing the same thing here in the Bay Area. There was a small window for ordered 2009s in the wake of the poor 2008 sales. Some dealers gave similar discounts but not financing because they thought 2009 was going to be more of the same. However, BMW has issued statements of reducing output and moving inventory from the US allotment to other countries. The M3 plant will be shut down for an additional week, how many M3s are that not being made?

I bought a 2008 and my SA is very cool, we shot the breeze when I went back to get my trunk mat recently. He is seeing the same thing from the computer screen, all the allocations for the next 2 months (Nov/Dec) are low and already filled by customers.

BMW appears to be willing to scale down to keep demand high. Who knows what you'll see next Sep/Oct in terms of deals but one thing for sure...it won't be cheaper than today's 2008 bottom, IMO.

I'll append my comment with the following caveat. My 'sources' are in NY/NJ, Northern Virginia and the Seattle area. It's possible that those areas are propped up more than Lexington, KY. Other than that, I find it hard to believe 09's are going for 1000 over invoice already.

You may be right about the prices in the bigger cities.

However, I don't live in that podunk backwater of Lexington. I live in the great city of Louisville. Actually not a small as you may think (admittedly smaller than the cities that you mentioned) but much bigger than Lexington. A town which I hate with a passion, BTW. And once I told the dealer in Lexington about my offer here, he bid me good day. So, it's not all about the size of the city.

I've seen my bud's invoice showing 3500 off an ordered 09 base ///M E92. So it can be done.

It is also possible around Seattle area as well on 09 models. I am currently working on a deal that is around $3K off the MSRP price on a 09. I agree with you as far as $1K over invoice on 09 models. That is hard to believe in our area as well.
