I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a bulletin for this. It's probably for the exhaust noise or diff ticking that they're mistaken on. Rocks getting into your brakes is technically normal. You just have to get it out. If the e brake is causing the problem, than they should fix that.

still not fixed

hello everyone, i have attached the bulletin that the dealer gave me about the cowbell noise, i clearly stated to him that those are not my symptoms and he said that BMW of NA believes that this is the closest thing to our problem. Basically they cant fix something unless bmw knows about it, hence therefore they cant get paid. so they did some research got paid for that, and sent me home with my problem.

does anyone know the next step? call bmw of NA?

and best of all the noise wasnt happening when i was at the dealer, i am complaining about a problem they couldnt replicate.

Steven

That bulletin has nothing to do with the issue most folks are experiencing under this thread. If you search for posts under my user name, you will see some photos of the e-brake spring that was causing the problem in my car, as well as several other M3’s, according to the tech at my dealership. And by the way, the response about the dealer not getting paid “unless BMW knows about it” is a bunch of crap.

+ 1. This memo is re: clunk sounds from MT during low speed shifting and load reversal.

By the way, what do they mean by "sport mode?" This car doesn't have a single "sport mode" per se IMO.

Post a video of the sound you're experiencing. You may in fact be dealing with something normal.

Elh... is dead on with this issue.

Steven...... I had the same problem.... My wife was like WTF is this a garbage truck we are driving.... Ooo No.... to the dealership. As I rolled into the dealership garage the noise happened, people who were there spun around like WTF was that..... In fact they tried to convince me it was normal Diff noise... SR.... Man no it's not diff noise i know exactly what that sounds like.

After i did my research on this site i told them check the eBrake mechanism at the wheel. That sound like a spring building tension and slapping against the shield.

They never admitted that the Customer pointed them to the problem... but let's just say the issue was resolved.....

Hope this helps man..... or try another dealer ship... Hassel or Habberstad

I got some cowbell last night in my E93 with DCT -- after I had parked the car with the parking brake on and was going down a big hill.

After much anticipation, the cowbell has emerged on my E93 at about 3.5K miles.

Was backing up in a mall garage and noticed people looking at my car skeptically, not for its dashing looks, but for the heifer obviously trapped somewhere under my car. I was used to whining noises on slow speed maneuvers, and had always wondered what this cowbell thread was about. Now I know.

One of the nice things about living in NYC is the uneven back breaking roads the DOT makes when they fix potholes. Every time a rock gets in the brake shield and I get the cowbell, I head to the bumpiest road I know, set the suspension on sport plus and hang on. Usually does the trick.

What I found worked for me is put it in reverse and just keep backing up until the sound is gone. I've a pretty long driveway and as I got to the end in reverse, the loose gravel came out.

I had this exact sound on one of our first couple days of having the car re-delivered from ED with only 350 miles total on the odometer. It happened in a parking lot when I was showing the car to one of my friends. I had the top down so we both heard it. And the "cow bell" sound occurred only when I was in reverse. It was so loud and startling, I literally thought that I had run over an empty soup can. After going into drive, back into reverse and then back into drive, the sound went away.

We are at 600 miles now and I have only heard this sound that one time.
