Flat Tire and Roadside Assistance

Silly question. What should I do if I were ever to get a flat tire? I don't have BMW Assist and not a member of AAA or any other roadside assistance plan. Should I just call a flat bed tow truck and get the car towed to NTB or Discount Tire or the dealer?

Interestingly enough, this happened to me the other night. One of my brand new Michelin PSS blew out on 610 by the Galleria. We're AAA members, so we called them and requested a flat bed and had the car towed at no charge to a tire store that I trust. You could also get towed to the dealer, but expect to get ripped on the price of a new tire. I'd highly recommend AAA (one incident will pay for the membership, plus you get hotel discounts), but if not, just call up a flat bed tow truck (or have one of the tow trucks that will almost inevitably show up contact their dispatcher for one).

Why don't you have BMW assist? The basic service is free for 4 years. Press the button and set up your account........Phil

BMW Assist comes with purchase of a new car. I bought mine used so I don't think i have it since I don't think BMW Assist accounts transfer over to subsequent owners?

I've been operating on the assumption that I had BMW Assist all this time...

Go read my thread about what happened to me recently on a trip up to Dallas:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=631388

I didn't have any other options left so I called BMW roadside assistance. They had a flatbed out to me within 45 mins (I was in the middle of nowhere) and towed me back to a BMW dealership about 50 miles away for free.

I'm fairly sure the M3 comes with roadside assistance for life, due to having no spare tire and no run-flats. They will tow you to the nearest dealer.

For a cost. I believe the free-of-charge aspect ends with the warranty at 4 years. Still wondering whether its transferable.

I am the second owner of the car and it worked for me, they told me free of charge. Now I hope I don't get a bill in the mail...

If you are a subsequent owner, how do you create a BMW Assist account in your name with your contact information? Or is the account simply tied with the VIN?

The account is in your name. They ask you a few question and set it up. Of course they'll know how long the vin has been in service...........Phil

If your car is covered under warranty you get a free tow to dealership. You have to sign up your car (used or new) with bmwna or whatever it is. Ask you SA and he can tell you the number to call to get your name associated with your vehicle.

I had a tire blow out on me and they got me a tow even though my name wasn't associated with the car. I called the dealership and since they knew who I was, they contacted BMWNA to get me the tow. I then purchased my own tire and had the dealership rip me off on a mount and balance. But all in all i saved myself a tow and $150 bucks on a tire.

Thanks for the advice about AAA, I think it would be a good investment.

Wrong. BA follows the car. Call them and have it transferred to you and your email address.

Confirmed today..

Oncoming vehicle turned what was going to be an ok (though still deep) amoutn of standing water in to a tidal wave, which promptly stalled me out. Car wont start... Called BMW and they had road side assistance attempt to assist me. Car was linked to me already, just had to verify the VIN.

Regardless, no tow trucks are being deployed right now and my car is dead. Water has receded, but still no luck I'm an idiot.

Just in the drive of my office complex. My roommate is stalled in his vette, too.

North Dairy Ashford, right at I10.

What possible destruction might I have caused?

At this point don't try to start the car......just get it towed. Most of the damage is done with all of the restart attempts.................Phil

Sounds like you hydro-locked your motor. Fortunately, it sounds like you were driving at low speeds, so you could be okay. If you're driving at higher engine speeds, you can very easily blow a rod due to the engine locking up so quickly. Whatever you do, DO NOT try to start the car again. The engine will need to be broken down, cleared of water, and inspected for any damage.

I tried to restart once after the initial stall, and a few times once the water had receded. It did not seem like it was attempting to start either time... I hope that's better than it sounding like it was trying to turn over.

Feeling pretty damned stupid right now.

By the way, a tow truck will be here "in approximately 4 hours". What a day.
