If you get new tires that are going on your existing OEM wheels, you do not need TPMS. You simply keep them on there.
If you're getting new wheels and tires, then you should pick up a new set of TPMS. |

Mounting and dismounting tires and wheels to take off your factory TPMS modules (to move them to another set of wheels) is not worth the headache and/or potential damage that my result. Just buy brand new TPMS modules for your new wheels...and call it a day.

How often do the TPMS need to be changed out when installing new tires on OEM wheels?
The person at three local tire places told me they need to switch out my TPMS for new ones that they sell, they are not OEM tpms tho. They told me every time you change out tires the TPMS are likely to fail. The old ones need to be taken out and new ones put in because they get dirty and need to be cleaned. |

The TPMS reciever in your car is CALIBRATED (and coded) to work with the OEM TPMS transmitters inside your wheels. Attempting to use an aftermarket TPMS module (that isn't properly coded) will not work. In other words...the shop was trying to make some money off you. (by feeding you that crap) There is a grain of truth to what they said about replaceing the TPMS modules though... Trying to re-use old TPMS modules (off the factory OEM wheels) can sometimes lead to TPMS failures. They are pretty fragile, and many tires shops are not careful when these are un-installed. (resulting in some damage to the unit) That's why I said they should be left alone, and new TPMS modules purchased for the new wheels. It's more expensive, but it's a lot less hassle in the long run.

so when I get new tires on my 19 inch oem's I should make sure the installer does not touch the tpms system right?
What about the valve stem? Does that need to be replaced? |

He didn't need the TPMS, so he removed them and offered them for sale. They look completely new and unblemished, and the valve necks are present, but the dill valves are not there. Are you saying, these are not likely to work?
