What makes this a cool camera? If it's got their full-frame sensor, then the potential IQ is very high, but why not a Zeiss or a German lens? Looks to me like it make lack features of their top digital rangefinder and yet cost more. I don't get it.

Dave, this is like asking what makes the Apple iPhone cool?

In regards to the Leica, the engineering and quality is arguably second-to-none. When they had the trade show here, I played around with their entire line. I'd have to say they make some insanely good products, albeit lacking many features that you'd find in cameras 2-10x less in price.

The main advantage of the X1 over the M9 is autofocus and built-in flash. It's also significantly cheaper than their rangefinder models. But, as far as a point-and-shoot camera, it's hard to beat its IQ. As I recall, it's not full-frame like the M9, and you can't switch lenses. That being said, it's a pricey point-and-shoot that probably isn't worth the money. But, to each their own.

Oh yeah, and Leica lenses/bodies are german-made.

I was just checking out the Leica S2. $22,000 for the just the body, plus another $5,000 for platinum service. Then add the cost of lenses.

The S2 is a medium-format camera. You can't compare it to any Canon or Nikon. It is a pretty camera, but for that price, I'd prolly go for a Mamiya or Hasselblad.

I was also looking at the "cheap" blad, the 31 megapixel model that sells for around $15k. I would like to demo one of those just for a day or two to see what shooting MF is like.

You can rent a MF camera, such as the 'blad, a Mamiya, a Pentax or one of the several other 645 format cameras that are readily available. Many have several digital backs to chose from with up to 50MP resolution. Unfortunately, the cost goes up geometrically as you add mega-pixels.

Anyone seriously considering buying one of these would surely want to rent or borrow one before plunking down at least 10-large with only one lens. If you're going to be hired to shoot billboards, then these are the cameras to use.

was looking at all these cameras in a shop in NYC, pretty sure i drooled on the case....

Some of their point and shoots (although very expensive) weren't as badly priced as i had expected.
