Going to echo what many of the others have stated here.
Went in to do an oil change today, asked them to please fill 8.5L (Liters, not quarts) and leave me 1.5L in the trunk. I was planning on topping it off as I drove around if the indicator said so. I know the BMW specs state 8.8 with a filter change, but I thought 300ml under the recommended level would not be a big deal for a couple dozen KM. Initially the guage loaded up just a hair over the 0 mark, no add 1qt though. As I was driving back home, I reset the indicator (you can do this by being on the oil indicator on your cluster, and pressing and holding the BC button for like 5 secs). Did this twice, the 2nd time the indicator reset to just a hair UNDER the max level. Moral of the story? Seams like 8.5L was the magic number for my vehicle. |

So I haven't been putting any oil in for the past month or so - before that was adding in 100 to 250mL at a time to get it jsut right at the max for my track days. Well nothing budged, I went to the track days.
Then today, 2 track events plus 2 weeks later it decides to tell me I'm above max. Ive been driving the car hard chasing PB's, drifting for fun and giving Bimmerfest on-lookers a show with the same amount of oil with no problem - but then light comes on and my brain starts freaking out. Drained the front sump expecting a little bit to come out but damn near 1L came out. I had about 250mL in an extra bottle, drained it into a tupperware on top of a bunch of towels, poured it into the extra bottle and it was to the brim. Now must go drive around the block - the stupid meter probably won't reset, but it's also more for me to run the car and come back and see if it is leaking at all in the morning, even though I tightened the shit out of it. These cars are retarded. |

On a side note, the damn thing won't read, it's just constantly "reading" but not spitting out a measurement. I don't know if the first time it re-reads it takes forever or if somehow the sensor is faulty now. What a headache. |

athe reading takes forever when you add oil. Try driving on the freeway for about 10-15 minutes. That usually how long it takes to get an updated oil level reading on my car.

Recently changed my oil with the "new BMW 10w60 oil"...had a great time doing this, I know I'm weird, and my car feels great with fresh oil! I must say, I love having Race Ramps...makes doing this much much easier.

No I haven't...been doing this way since I bought the car years ago. I always drain around the same 8.5-8.75 liters. I literally let it drip for an hour then scoop up the rest of the old oil in the oil filter housing.

I just did my first oil change like this (only lifting the front) and measured that 7.25 liters came out the bottom (cold engine). Next time I will go warm engine and level and see what I get.
Also keep in mind that the filter soaks up a lot of the oil so it's not just what is coming out the bottom that counts. BTW, good tip for others -- the OEM drain plugs are made of soft metal and strip very easily. I ended up using the "SMART-O R5 Oil Drain Plug M12x1.5mm" from Amazon and they fit nicely and didn't leak like another non-OEM plug that I tried. Also, there seems to be less risk of over-tightening or stripping the plugs (as compared to OEM).

I just wanted to clarify, with proof, the oil drain plugs torque settings... The M6 and M8 torque values in the second pic refer to bolts that connect the oil filter housing to the engine block (and therefore are to be ignored during a standard oil change) Edit: I still have to verify the new torque setting of 40Nm for the oil filter cap, but I believe it... Also, I am unsure as to why it says wrench size 24mm next to oil filter cap, but I got this from an older document, so it may be an older obsolete oil filter cap it is referring to.. Bottom line, when I change the oil this week, oil drain plugs will be torqued to 25Nm and oil filter cap will be torqued to 40Nm.

Picked up a 2013 E92 M3 last week, 10k miles on it.
Did an engine oil change yesterday. The oil filter cap shows 40nm (30 lb/ft), and has an additional plastic piece that covers the 36mm cap head. The piece is an anti-rotation lock cap (part # 11 42 7 846 044). Sounds like there must have been some issues with oil filter caps torqued to 25nm (18 lb/ft) coming loose during operation. So, they increased the torque spec, and added a cap lock. For the two 6mm hex drain plugs, I used 16.5 lb/ft (about 22nm). I know the spec shows 18 lb/ft (25nm), but my experience with my E46 was that 16.5 lb/ft was plenty good. Same 6mm hex drain plug as used on the E92. The key with removing these is to clean out where the 6mm hex is inserted, make sure it's fully inserted, and keep upwards pressure on it while loosening and tightening and torqueing. I also found that I got more complete drainage with the car level, vs with just the front elevated on race ramps. Let it drain for 30 to 40 minutes. Used a suction device to clean out the oil filter housing. Put 8.5 liters in. Oil level reading is right in the middle between minimum and maximum. |

Did my (first) oil change today.
Big thanks to all contributors of this thread. Could not have gone more smoothly! (Apart from me wondering what the hell to do while the oil was draining...) My oil had 7000km and it came out BLACK. I wouldn't want to see it after the recommended 24,000km! Geez! I drained it all, turkey baster'd the oil filter housing (thanks for that suggestion!) and added 9.0L of oil and my E-dipstick shows exactly halfway (I had put in 8.6L but I got the +1L message). I will drive it a few times, make a couple resets and see where it sits... Torque'd the drain plugs to 25Nm and the oil filter housing cap to 40Nm, drove it home for about 45 minutes and nothing leaked. I have to say that 40Nm for that plastic cover didn't seem tight at all... I tightened it by hand and then used my 2 ft long torque wrench and it clicked as soon as I turned. Somehow it didn't feel as tight as the drain plugs. Maybe it has something to do with metal on metal and plastic on plastic... Anywho. Thank you, everyone, for making this process fun and without pain.

quick question, i did my first oil change on my E92. i thought i had a 36mm socket but i didn't and all the stores around me didnt have one in stock. my question is, as soon as i get a socket for the oil filter is it ok to change that at a later time, after ive already changed the oil?

Great post.
FYI - after draining overnight and removing as much as possible from the oil filter housing, I added 8.5L of TWS 10W-60. My first drive of ~15 mins showed an oil level identical to the pre-change level (~65% position between min/max). The next drive ~10 mins indicated the +1L symbol. I added 0.6L and drove the next day resulting in an indicated level of ~95%. It may be best to sneak up on the desired level by adding 1/2 the indicated message. |

Hey Guys, Great info on this thread. I changed my oil yesterday and found something strange. The drain plug size of the rear sump was different from the front sump. The front sump's was 6mm and the rear sump was 8mm - both with hex heads. While removing them I thought thats how they are but when I tried to put the brass washers from the Mann Oil filter kit that I ordered from Autohausaz, to my surprise I found that both washers were for 6mm and wouldn't fit the 8mm drain plug so I ended up using the old brass washer that came off the drain plug. From what I have read on the BMW blog and this forum for the Oil change, the drain plugs are 6mm hex. But on the first post of this thread ( on the second picture above) I see different torque values handwritten for M6 and M8 which seem similar to what I have on my car. I really doubt if the sizes are different for different cars. My car is 2012 E93. Can some experts/DIY'ERS chime in if they have faced this? I plan to call AutohausAZ as well. |

I have a '13, and both sump screws are the same....perhaps one of the threads has been repaired? And if that's not the case, then some tech messed up one of the hex, and simply replaced it. As long as it's not leaking I wouldn't worry about it too much.
