Based on the aforesaid premise, I suggest neither car. You can't afford it. If the price difference between a 335is and M3 matters you should reconsider your priorities because the price difference of ~7k is meaningless when you are already spending 50k+, unless you are paying the whole thing up front in cash.

On the other hand if the car is affordable, wth are you nickel and diming a 50k+ purchase for, if you are already spending the money spend the extra 7k for the M3.

Choose the 335is if you want it, but it is nonsensical to choose it based on money if you want a M3. I always wonder wtf when a guy driving a 335is wishes he could afford an M3, it is absurd to say you can afford a 335is but not a similarly optioned M3. Otherwise you are eating cup ramen every meal and living in a hole to afford the 335is.
if you can't afford 10k for options on a 56k car, you can't afford it

The cost of the car(s) is not an issue at all actually. There are a couple factors at hand though that I'm not afraid to admit:

1) The M3 is on the higher end of the spectrum of whaT my wife is "allowing" me to spend on a car. Could we afford more? Sure, but I think spending ~55k on a car is a fine compromise at the moment.

2) Rates on the '12s right now are pretty terrible, whether I can afford it or not, I'm not trying to get myself locked into a bad rate / deal.

3) Conversley, the rate I'd be getting on the '11 is very good.

4) The '11 M3 is EXACTLY what I want as far as the color, transmission, roof type go and it is sitting there on the lot. I know it is missing a few options, but it is very tempting to me.

But what are your priorities in a car in general? Do you prefer luxury or performance? Will you get frustrated that you have to carry your hand held garage door opener in your car? It all depends on what is important to YOU!

If you can afford it, it is absurd to buy something that is 55k that is not exactly when you want when you CAN afford the extra ~7k. Why would anyone spend 55k for something that is not what they want?

All the additional reasons stated regarding price is nickel and diming a 55k purchase. If you can afford either car what in the hell are you doing spending 55k then worrying about another 5-10k. If you can afford it, it is meaningless as monthly payments, or you should just have the additional funds to put down.

As for the wife, I only use my wife as an excuse when I'm weaseling out of something. Putting anything on your wife is a cop out. Any wife, I should think, would want you to spend the 10k more to get exactly what you want, IF you truly could afford it.

I really don't care about options. The cars are, in my opinion, adequately equipped with no options. I bought a used E90M3 because the price was great at the time. The only criteria for me were a gray or black exterior, a black interior and a CPO warranty. The car I bought has some options, but they mean little to me.

If the options are more important than the car, buy any car that has the options you want. I looked at 335i, but would have had to add a limited slip, tune, downpipes, bigger intercooler, meth injection, nonrunflat tires, coilovers and more to make it what I wanted. The M3 had a powerful enough engine and a good enough suspension in stock form to be a comfortable and sporty daily driver for me.

I won't compete with you rich guys about what one can afford and can't afford, but to say that one cannot afford a $55k car because one does not want to spend $65k on a $55k car with $10k worth of options seems stupid to me.

Performance is most important to me. All the options are certainly nice, but not required - especially if some of them are something that I could add down the line.

M3. Had both, two entirely different cars. M3 is obviously the better all around car. But, if money is the issue, buy what you can afford.

What rate are you getting on the 2011?
Have you heard about Penfed bank?

Like I said before. I had both 335i and M3. If you are really into sports cars and driving hard, you will want the M3. If you just want to loaf around town, get the 335i. I like driving hard, and the M3 was far better in this respect (even though my modded 335i was faster in a straight line.)

I like when people who have no idea about someone's personal finances tells that person they can't afford to buy a car. Isn't that what his parents/wife are for?

His question is this: "Will I regret having a car with more options but a less capable drivetrain than an M3 with no options?"

Sonorous V8 that revs to 8300rpms > any conceivable option

I don't get this "if you don't get 10k worth of options you can't really afford the car"... That shows why BMW is making poser cars rather than high performance sports cars... Hmmm do I want a high revving V8 or leather seats?

I was offered 1.9% over 60 months on the 2011.

Yeah, I was trying to steer things away from a financial pi$$ing match, but things always turn in to that somehow.

if the IS was fully loaded with nav etc, i could somewhat ponder the decision

but that IS sounds like a stripper to me too...

Why don't you buy used?
or lease if you don't plan on keeping the car long

As noted above, check the rates offered by credit unions. In February of this year, I got 1.59% for 48 months from my local federal credit union on my 2008 M3. As far as I know, interest rates should be down, not up, since then.

So if you get a 2011 you save about $800 over the life of the loan (1.9% vs 2.49%
Vs paying $800 more for a 2012 with more options?
I think you'd get more than $800 when it's time to resell a 2012 vs 2011

Everyone here makes such a big issue of interest rates
When at the end of the day it totals less than a $1000 dollars over 5 years
