Those are actually awesome. I had one - if you could find one that runs well then you're all set! The body will rot but the rest of the car stands the test of time. For the ultimate in simplicity pick up an early 80s (W123) 240D with a 4-speed manual. 75 (?) hp i think and 33secs to 60mph.

Good Beater Car

i have a 05' Hyundai Accent GT , with the 1.6L 4-cyl ,automatic w/OD,tach,white gauge cluster with blue lighting (cool at night) ,fog lights,cd player,cold ac,power windows ,rear spoiler w/brake light,rear wiper,14" alloys,and a few other features, i have had it since 08/06 (i bought it used with 25k) it's been very reliable,it gets about 35 mpg highway,26-28 city, and there's an aftermarket cold air intake on ebay for $ 20.
