Computer Guru's, I need help!

I keep getting a message from my computer telling me that I have low disc space. I want to buy an external hard drive to put my music and pictures on. Could I just completely move my Itunes to this hard drive? Would I be able to access my Itunes whenever I wanted? If I move all my music onto an external hard drive will I still be able to update my Ipod when I need to?
I know this post may not be too clear, please ask if you need clarification, thanks!

Once you've moved the music and photos from your internal hard drive you can then delete them. Then do a complete backup of everything that's left. Afterwards, run defrag.

Often it's much cheaper to buy an Internal HD and External HD case then it is to buy an external drive.

I used an old Maxtor 120 I had and bought an External Case for $15 from NewEgg.

Good point, do you have a laptop or desktop, if you have a desktop just get an extra internal drive, you can get something like a 60gb for close to nothing

I got this setup and it works great and is small so it won't take up a lot of desk space as well as easy to travel with.

2.5 External Enclosure $24
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817145135

100gb laptop hard drive $91
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145116

This works great as it is powered by the USB 2.0 cable that is connected to your computer so it is truly portable (USB 1.0 requires a power supply or the use of 2 USB ports).

Thanks for the info! I do have a laptop for those who are asking. With this setup will I be able to put it together easily?

Yea, You just take the hard drive and attach it to the board (really it is very simple, you just plug it in and it will only go one way) Then you place the board with the hard drive connected into the case (it just slides in and again it only goes one way) and screw the case closed and poof your done.

Using a 2.5" HD is nice because it is powered by the cable. a 3.5" HD needs a power source (AKA wall plug for an external case) but you can get easily 3-4x as much space on a 3.5 for the price compared to a 2.5".

Example:

A 300-400gb internal 3.5" drive runs around $100-120.

Meanwhile a 2.5" laptop drive will only get you around 100gb for $100.

For both external cases run around $20-$30.

If you have the easy capabilities to use the 3.5" that has to be plugged into the wall, it's the easy choice.

I could take mine apart and show you some pics really quick on how you install it so you can make sure it is something that would would be comfortable doing (I know people that HATE touching electronics.)

You won't be able to find a 2.5" HD with that much space for that price.

The 3.5" drives can be found around that price.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SubCategory=14

And the External Enclosure:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817180004

$147.98 + Shipping and you got yourself 400gb on tap, easily accessed from any computer with a USB port. I agree FireWire is better, but there is always the time that I wanted to bring my HD to a friends house to transfer files and he didn't have a firewire port. So I switched to USB2.0.

The pictures of the enclosure show exactly how easy it is to put together. Connect the two cables (One power, one data. And they only fit one way so you can't get anything confused), use the four screws to mount to HD inside the case, and put the two pieces of the case back together. Then plug it in and turn it on!

The ICY Dock appears that it goes inside a PC tower. Here is the link from the manufacture site http://www.icydock.com/product/mb337.htm So I don't think this is going to work for what you want.

If you follow this link anything that shows up here ought to work for you as an enclosure for a 3.5in drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...k=&srchInDesc=

If that link doesn't work for some reason let me know and I will help you nav through neweggs site to find what you need. (newegg is not the only place to get these items....just easier to show you what you need, and the prices are really great too).

CriagG is right that if you rather have a bigger drive that 3.5in is better than the 2.5in and that I would too stay away from firewire. Even though firewire is faster not everyone has a firewire port, and at least if people don't have a usb 2.0 they at least have a 1.1, it will still transfer just not as fast. Plus you also want to look for a drive that runs at about 7200RPM though 5400RPM is not shabby just one of those faster is better things, and that just means how fast the drive can spin.

So these cases will work for the drive i have selected?
