M3's alter ego

Many people complain about the gas mileage of the E9x ///M3. Now I'm not sure about you 6mt guys, but for the DCT crew.....drop it in D3 and watch the gas stations go by. Now this was after a fill up and 40 miles of driving. This car gets more amazing as time goes on............Phil

Is that highway? Cause I drive mine in d1 or d2 and I still get only 16mpg. Not that I care anymore...

I get great gas milage on my cross country trips ... then I am in no hurray since I am retired

I don't have the d1, d2 or d3 options etc since I have 6MT and no iDrive, however, on the highway going cross country 90% highway and 10% town/city I manage to have 10.8L to 10.9L/100 KM.

Yeah this was highway cruising.....I think D1 and D2 are too low. They should be used on ice and snow..............Phil

On flat-highway cruising, I've also managed over 25 mpg (I have a 6MT).

The problem isn't the car, but the driver. I cannot, for the life in me, resist from going to WOT at least a handful of times during each drive. Most of the time on the highway, it's WOT in 4th, 5th or 6th, for a brief period, so as to avoid exceeding the "acceptable" speed on the highway. And then, during city driving, there is that opportunity to extend 1st or 2nd gear and go almost straight into 5th or 6th once you reach the road's speed limit (e.g. 45 mph).

So overall, while it's theoretically possible to get decent mileage on the right type of road, realistically, you never will because to go to WOT and high rpm is just too damn fun.

Exactly... That's why I average 11.8 mpg

WOT in even 4th gear on the highway is kind of ridiculous unless you live in Germany because redline in 4th on 6MT is ~130 MPH. I'd recommend WOT in 3rd -- it'll pull harder, get to redline faster, and you'll stay (marginally) closer to the speed limit.

The only way I can achieve good gas mileage is to drive with the cruise control lever. Because when my foot hits the gas pedal car goes fast. Got it to 100 on the on ramp to highway today, in 3rd gear.

Oh believe me, I go to WOT in 3rd as well, but from 60mph to about 75 mph, WOT in 4th or 5th is just fine and produces enough of the intake roar that I love so much, without going to redline. If we redline in anything past 2nd gear, we're going way over the limit.

Thus the title.....alter ego. It's just amazing how versatile this car can be. It might be hauling groceries on Friday night and Saturday by 10am it's hauling ass at some track.................Phil

Too slow! Wide open in S5 or S6 only for me

In all seriousnes that's pretty good for the amount of power on tap!

Here in Houston we have a few crazy long on/off ramps where you have a protected sometimes empty stretch of road. nothing like a quick bump to 110 in third I believe. S65 never ceases to amaze me with it's awesomely weird power curve. that engine doesnt seem like it's losing power at the redline, it acts like it wants to keep going!

Og, gas milage, well I don't know cause i can't keep my foot out of it. oops.

No argument from me. And this is in fact what attracted me most to this car.

I forgot to mention that this type of mileage can only be had if the CEO is in the passenger seat ..................Phil
