side vents
what is the purpose of the side vents on the M3? do they really vent the engine compatment, thereby allowing rapid-er cooling?

I think the purpose of the vents is looks, and possibly some unintentional cooling ability.

alot of people like things that are functional, and not just tacked on to look nice. Things like side vents and hood scoops that aren't functional are a bit questionable. |

Side vents look cool on sporty coupes'
I preferred the M5 without, because it's a bit more grown up and should be a little more discreet, much like the older E39 M5 On the E46 M3, it looks fabulous, hopefully will look great on the new one too |

You can order the side vents on any 5-series for an extra $300. I don't know about the 3-series, however.

umm, maybe the parts. I've never seen a side vent option on the car builder............... also never seen a 530 or 545, 550 whatever with the side vents most people who can afford a 5 have enough style and class to not rice out their cars |

good point. If it does then adding chrome trim or 162 wheels on the 325i is ricey too.

A close friend of mine had an E39 M5 for a few weeks, blacked out windows etc - was the business! And he loves acceleration and dualing with cars (ricers and so forths) at traffic lights - most of them would take him on and realise afterwards it was an M5, because from a side on view, you could never tell, could be a 520i with good options for all you know With sidevents, well I'm sure the cars dualing against it would not be so enthusiastic |

What if you were to actually cut out a part of the inner fender and then run a tube down to the brakes to act as a duct for brake cooler.
