CSL/Mini Cooper OEM Battery Swap = 24 lbs. Savings & OEM fitment

Using the well put together OEM LW battery swap DIY from Doba_s and trusting that Lemans_Blue_M was right about the MC/CSL battery being a direct OEM type fit, I figured why not, 24 lbs is a nice savings for 130 bucks. Here's the link on Doba's LW Battery Swap/Removal, etc.

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233195

I ran a LW Braile battery in my E46 Supercharged M3 and if the car sat for more than 1 day, it would not start, etc. So I had no plans on using it on the E92. But the OEM MC/CSL battery should yield enough power, and is a nice compromise for some WR.

OEM Battery on the scale.

Mini Cooper/CSL Battery on the scale.

OEM and CSL/MC batteries next to the Braile.

The OEM bracket is bolted into the appropriate place, NO AM bracket is needed, OEM fitment FTW!

The Drain is a perfect fit and placement as well.

Finshed, sure enough it's a perfect OEM fitment!

sweet, thanks for the confirmation. One quick question, can you still get to the negative terminal without removal of black bracket?

Nice. Been thinkin of this myself. Please post long term update! I did not experience problems with my Braille for some time then the plethora of annoying little gremlins, all due to the battery crept in.

OEM fitment FTW +2

Great job. I may consider getting this. Did you order the battery from the stealer? $5.28 per pound of weight savings. Pretty good deal

Thanks! I had a friend of mine who's a BMW mechanic pick it up for me at cost. I agree not a bad deal for the weight savings, when you start adding it all up, it does help.

Awesome write-up and pics.

They make CSL Mini Cooper? So if I were to pick this up at a mini dealer which battery would I ask for?

Thanks Bro, I should have been more specific about the "CSL" reference. They are two different part #'s, but exactly the same battery, it's ordered though BMW or Mini. Here is the part # 61217591081.

Drew,

You'll love this battery.

You get the weight reduction, without all the 'drama' associated with the much smaller lightweight racing batteries.

This I why I recommended the Mini Cooper battery as a viable alternative. (in doba's lightweight battery thread)

After being constantly frustrated by the lackluster performance of these tiny racing batteries, I finally decided to buy a more appropriately sized lightweight battery for my M3.

It was a pain in the ass to constantly need a jump start because my battery was DOA.

With this smaller Mini Cooper battery, there are NO starting issues, and NO lost program settings.

Thanks guys, but the credit goes to Doba and Lemans, without their input I would have never known!

I see the stock bracket holding down the battery on the right side, but is anything holding it down on the left?

Yes, there is a fixed metal bracket 'lip' on the left side as well. (to hold that side of the battery down)

The right side bracket is both adjustable and removable.

Does the Mini/CSL batter come with the bracket, or do you use the original bracket?

Great info. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.

Is everybody replacing the stock battery tracking the car??? It's nice to save some weight, but at 480 vs 900 CCA it's almost HALF as powerful. Not a smart choice for somebody using the car infrequently, and is sub-freezing temperatures in winter. But a good option for those obsessed with weight savings . And hey, isn't the car supposed to be better balanced with the weight of the stock battery? Yeah, probably minimal, but so is the weight savings. Just playing devil's advocate .

You bring up a good point. Here's the 06+ MZ4 battery:

For an additional 9lbs, you get 760CCA (37% boost).
