NY Intnl Auto Show pics

Posting some pics from the 2013 New York International Auto Show. Some BMW M content, but mostly other interesting cars.

As expected, it was a busy, well-attended event on day one:

Details from the M6 and M5 on the BMW stand.

The M6's carbon roof has a nice variation on the classic "double-bubble" shape.

The Garrett turbos in the vee of the new TT V8 are visible under the plastic cover.

I also noted that there is no obvious strut tower or upper chassis bracing in the engine bay. Will there be room to add it later as an aftermarket option?

The new Viper TA was definitely a highlight. Cool details: stock front tow hook, and what looks like quite a bit of negative camber up front.

The new Camaro Z28 also looks like a winner. Beautiful pearlescent white paint, a serious splitter up front (?functional), and a stripped out trunk (no carpeting or sound-deadening material). Looks like they could have saved more weight from the seats, though--based on their side-view thickness, they look like they weigh 75lbs a piece!

I sat in the new Cayman S and loved the feel of it. Interior materials look top-notch, and the new Carrera GT-style sloping center console puts the shifter up close to your hand so it's not a big drop from the steering wheel.

In typical Porsche fashion, though, the options get ridiculous very quickly, turning a relative performance bargain into an expensive show toy.

The Subaru WRX concept was definitely a show highlight. Amazing-looking car. Hard to believe it's a four-door based on its shape. The neon-green accents were over the top, but likely just auto show attention-getters. And the front lighting is a bit F 'n' F. But check out those wheels--if I'm not mistaken, they're BBS FIs. Chance of those wheels making it on the production car?

The new Corvette Stingray looked like the world's biggest Matchbox car displayed up on the wall.

Loved the huge exhaust tips on the Nismo 370Z. Now you don't have to buy an aftermarket coffee-can exhaust--Nissan will do it for you. Note how small the actual exhaust is leading up to the big tips. It's like stuffing your pants with a giant cucumber wrapped in aluminum foil (Spinal Tap reference). All show, no go.

Huge wheels/tires are still the trend. Porsche has 20" wheels on the Boxster, Cayman, and even the new GT3. And Audi is putting 21" monsters on its new RS7. Those suckers have to be heavy. No wonder it needs big carbon ceramic brakes to slow down. (Chicken or the egg? Big brakes to slow down heavy wheels, or big wheels to clear big brakes?)

Chevy one-upped Audi, though, with a Hollywood-concept goofball Camaro from a new animated movie, Turbo, coming out this summer. Yes, those are 405/25 tires on 24" wheels out back!

And this one made me giggle. A peek under the hood of the new Honda Accord reveals an engine they call, with a straight face, "Earth Dreams."

I prefer the engine compartment of the Shelby 1000 Mustang. Look at that cone air filter--it's almost as big as my head!

Subaru is trying so hard and they are getting a lot better. Still not a fan of Subaru but they are coming along nicely.

Viper+towhook= Rice. (I don't care if they have 2000 hp in that pig)

Porsche Cayman looks nice.

Camaro is looking sweet.

Only 100 to be built. Cost will be around $210,000.
