Please Help!

My brother in law has been doing a major service and after flushing the power steering fluid there has been a persistent leak. We couldn't get it to stop so I had it towed to a BMW specialist shop. They are now saying that the thread on the rack is stripped and we are looking at $3065 to get it replaced and $480 labor to get it installed. I asked if it could be rethreaded but they are saying tollerances are too tight? Am I screwed? I picked this shop based on recommendation and reviews... I hope they are being honest on what needs to be done. Do you think rethreading the rack is not advised?

One local BMW dealer is saying $3200 OTD. Another local BMW dealer is saying $2700 OTD for the same thing. I'm really surprised the dealers are significantly cheaper than an Independant.

Valley Motorwerks dropped their price to $26__ OTD after I told them what the local dealerships would do. Freakin' M tax!

You can save another 15% @ the dealer w/a BMWCCA membership. If you don't already have one, you might want to spend the $40 or so bucks for it. Your $2700 OTD would drop to $2295 OTD.

No. I was advised against that d/t tight tollerances and space. Especially since it is aluminum. I asked my brother in law about that but he tended to agree with the shop. Especially since he had trouble with and probably caused the leak in the first place. I think he was gun shy to do any other harm. The thing is with all the other stuff he did as a part of the major service I'm still better off now than had I had the shop do all the work from the beginning. It's unfortunate that it happened but ultimately you have to pay to play this game and I wouldn't play it if I couldn't afford it.

Of course they will advise against it. They want your $3000. Aluminum is easy to fix, search youtube on how to fix damaged threads with a tap.
