I've never had this issue before. But I've heard it first-hand on someone else's car. So while some believe it's a phantom gremlin sound, I believe you all...but regardless:

ha-ha!

Grinding Metallic Noise F82 M3

Well,

I started hearing this noise last week on my European Delivery 2015 M3 with 1700 miles.

I blame it on the sand/gravel that is all over the parking lot at work.

I first heard it on the way home the 2nd day after driving on the stuff.

As I leave the sandy area, I hear a bunch of pinging in the wheel wells as the pebbles are flung off the tires.

Then sometimes during the rest of the drive, I get a brief 1/4 to 1/2 second LOUD can crushing sound.

I have the normal, non-carbon carbon ceramic brakes, and I will try the "push dust shield" method once I get home, so that I can actually hear if any pebbles drop out.

My problem is that until they sweep the parking lot, I will be re-introducing pebbles in to the system during every trip through the parking lot.

Ugh.

Anyway, here is a picture of her in Austria.

Cowbell alert here too. Not to beat a dead cow. Comes from the right rear at low speeds. Damn embarrassing. Happened after my first track day. Disappeared after highway driving. Made a brief reappearance a few months later then resolved in a day. Then again after a second track day. Again to be resolved transiently after driving on the highway. Then recurred after sitting overnight. The pebble theory makes sense given that it seems to disappear with centripetal force then reappear when heat and cold cause expansion and contraction of the rotor dust shield thus dislodging the "pebble" from where it might have gotten stuck. Who knows but glad to hear this is common on the forum. When I first heard the sound it sounded like something really bad, such as an axle about to fall off. Bizarre.

I will put in my 2 cents. My M has done this several times. It has been the stone in the heat shield every time. When it happens i have a 3/4 inch dowel I put through the spokes and push the shield back a few times in several locations.

I did notice there is very little clearance between the shield and the rotor. As the rotor get old and begins to rust the edges get rough. The rust can hit the shield and make the same noise. perhaps why the dowel works.

FML I just heard the cowbell sound on my car for the first time. A 2013 E92 with only 23k miles. Hopefully it's just a pebble stuck in the rotor or shield. :-/

Try to hop a curb and knock it out.

I got cow bell after driving on a gravel parking lot, then it disappeared a week later

The cowbell issue is back on mine. It made an appearance last year for a brief period, then nothing until now.

I am doubtful it's caused by a pebble stuck in the brake shield. The noise is loud and sounds like something hits a hollow pipe—too loud to be a small rock in the brake shield. Sounds like a ricochet of a small metal piece inside a hollow metal container—but it stops as soon as the car is not rolling. Sounds like it comes from the center rear area underneath the car. I am wondering though, if this issue has something to do with mufflers being replaced (I have MPE).

I remember this time it was triggered when I made a sharp right turn. It's more offensive when the car is cold, and seems more possible to replicate by backing up at a downward angle (like backing out of a driveway, down to the street).

I'm hoping I can show it to my SA and the shop foreman and see what they think.

Yup its a small rock etc, I have had it happen to me a couple times and usually booting it on the roads clears it but I got it again yesterday and after 30 miles driving to work the rock was still stuck in there even after pushing the heat shields to try and get it to fall out but it is stuck in there tight and usually I wouldn't mind but I was worried about the damage it is doing to the disc from the inside. Good job BMW garage is next to my work and they quoted me £50 to remove the wheel, caliber and disc to get the stone.

Cow Bell Noise

Is this the noise, link below? Having the exact same issue, but no clue what the problem or noise is coming from.

I had the noise in the rear passenger brake. Fooled around with the heat shield but no pebble came out. It went away after a quick hard brake from 60mph to 10mph getting off the freeway (with adequate space behind me of course). I braked hard enough to engage ABS, noise has been gone since.

From your video, it sounds different from mine. Yours sounds more like a solid metal hit, and it's more rhytmic/steady beat. Mine literally sounds like cowbell (hollow) and in random beats. I'll try to upload a video. BTW, it has now been gone by itself for about 2 weeks.

There's not question this issue is due to pebbles...I drove in a gravel lot today and heard it immediately...just take some further driving and hard stops to shake it out.

Cow Bell Noise

Some had suggested it's the driveshaft, supposedly diagnosed by BMW service.

Was having a cowbell type noise getting into and out of the car on either passenger or driver side. First thought was my aftermarket exhaust was touching something it shouldnt. After pushing the rotor backing plates off the hub and driving a bit the noise has vanished.

Cow Bell Noise

I would like to get the Cow Bell Noise checked out. Unfortunately my warranty had just expired. Does anyone know a good independent shop in San Francisco? Thank you in advance!

Funny people still persist thinking it's a pebble. It's not. We've known about this sound since 2010. It's the rear differential casing. It's made of two shells and there are flat thin sections of metal (to help dissipate heat in racing conditions) right where the two shells touch. As the differential joint turns it applies significant forces metal on metal. At walking speed, there can be some resistance to movement of the metal followed by a skidding release which resonates the casing sections. Imaging taking a garden metallic rake and pushing it on a metallic surface but also applying a normal force, if you apply sufficient pressure it will get stuck but as you increase tangential force it will jump and move in one jump.
There was a recall on lube being used in the differential I believe in 2011 for people who complained about this noise. Apparently the lube can make it go away.

You will tend to hear it after making turns on a parking lot or driving at walking speed.

I've heard it occasionally. it's quite normal, and is not a problem besides the noise.
