It greatly depends on what you are look for out of a car, if it's purely performance and a chassis which if you have the skill will ultimately be the more rewarding to steer then pick the M3 without question. But if you are after a car which arguably looks better, has a better engine note at less than 7/10th, has a much better interior design and style without argument and at anything up to 7/10th will drive as good as the M3, which means never going on track or have the skill to fully appreciate the M3's abilities then you should serious consider the S5, it is that good and I should know.

Over here there is a huge price difference between the two, it's over £10,000 ($20,000) so if money is a concern then the S5's case is made the stronger but for those in the US the gap is a lot closer but even then you shouldn't dismiss the S5 without a drive, if only to affirm your decision on picking the M3.

I test drove two S5's, a 2006 RS4, and one '08M3 (British spec) and I got the M3 at the end. Deal;$8,000 off MSRP for military, no tax & it's a much better performer. Found out in an EVO magazine a few months ago that the S5 engine burns about a 1liter of oil every several thousand miles. Normal for the engine but who the hell wants to buy 1 liter of engine oil every month!??

GET THE M3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Mine went through 1 litre in 4500miles, I personally don't call that bad but then to someone else that might seem excessive. I might add that it was the only oil I added to entire time I had it so maybe the run-in period was were the usage is at it's most.

P.S.
I am curious as to how you felt the RS4 compared to the S5, I test drove both thought I never intended taking a second hand RS4 but I found the RS4 to have much better steering feel, and the body felt better tied down but didn't feel it cornered any better.

I wanted to look at the S5, but my local dealer hadn't even gotten one yet, didn't know if they would ever get one, and didn't have any allocations to even order one. They were very helpful.

Same thing happened to me in CA about 3 months ago. The guy looked at me like "what do you expect, its an S5?" Just when I thought BMW NA sucked, maybe Audi does too.

Maintenance costs on Audis' are very expensive. It is not to say that BMWs' maintenance cost is cheap; however, there are more parts involved, such as your Quattro, more wear and tear on bushings, more labor intense for the water pump and thermostat, and the timing belt (oops). Do your math on maintenance cost. If money is no object, then go for the S5. But to me, I love the racing history of BMW, and I know what BMW is capable of, and even if I was offered an Audi with more horsepower, and less expensive, I would still purchase a BMW. My heart is in it. Beside, scheduled maintenance is not covered with Audi anymore (last time I heard, anyone can correct me). With BMW, it is 4 years 50k. How could you go wrong with that?

Yep. The relevant comp is a 335i coupe, not an M3. Then it's RS4 vs M3 but in the former's case it should be compared w/ an E90 M3.

Fifth Gear gave the nod to the 335i: for the S5 buy it in terms of looks as Walta de'Silva rolled out a beauty.

bullseye.

The M3 will probably find its best and most appropriate challenge from audi in the form of the RS5. I never understood the whole RS4 thing vs. e92...and the S5 is certainly below the M3's league.

I drove both. I bought the M3. It's just a different driving experience. It's a factory race car, made to be a race car. The S5 felt more that a nice street car. A little heavier feeling...a little more lumbering.

M3 has a much sportier and aggressive look than the S5 imo. S5 looks more like a classy grand tourer, while the M3 looks like an all out Sports Coupe

Car reviews I've seen state that the S5 is also a little front heavy and doesn't handle as well as BMW's - S5 is still a very good looking car though and the engine note is awesome

The S5 is definitely a hot car, and I love the L.E.D. DRL's, but I've been loyal to the M3 for 11 years now, so I would say buy the M3.

S5? Looks great especially the front part, the C pillars and the area around it look a tad like a Honda Accord, but still a very nice looking car. Interior is stunning, but the general feeling is of a large luxury/sports car. M3 is much more focused and nimble.
