BFG G-force R1 tires beats up the Hoosier R6

in the Tire Rack tests:

While the Hoosier R6 tires provided the expected responsiveness and grip, the BFGoodrich g-Force R1 radials provided quicker response and higher levels of grip, as well as more consistency lap after lap. Additionally, the g-Force R1 radials were more responsive to begin with, as they immediately began to carve through the transitions of the left-right-left s-turn and into the steady-state corners. This combination of characteristics allowed the drivers to run the g-Force R1 radials with greater confidence, reduced the variations in lap times and resulted in lap times that averaged just over one second faster than the Hoosier R6 tires on the approximate 45-second, nine-turn course. While the number of laps run didn't wear out any of the tires, the BFGoodrich g-Force R1 radials appeared to have less treadwear as well.

Do they make those for the M3? I thought the closest thing to racing tires are the PS Cups.

I have 265/35/18's all around for the track. exceppent tires. as good or better than the PCS IMO. (Michelin owns BFG BTW)

Michelin Cups you can drive to the track with and handle some moisture, R1 and Hoosiers should be trailered.

I drove 300 mile round trip in the BFG tires with no problem. the ride is very rough. you just have to pray there is no rain.

Or pack the R1's somewhere in the car and change at the track......but to be really fair it should be shaved cups against R1-R6 since they come shaved....so a shaved cup would be about as bad on the street as the R1-R6....

I am considering a set of TR motorsports with R1's for my M3...but will try the stock PS2's at the track 1st...

I had a driver's school where we did a wet skid pad. I was on R1s, what a joke. It went like this, accelerating traction, traction, traction....slide slide slide. No in between at all.

I would always load my track tires into my car for the trip to and from the track and then install them at the track. This would be critical if you expected rain during your trip to or from the track.

I'm sure the Hoosiers and or BFG will out perform the Michelin Cup tires in the dry, and you'll get more wear out of them on the track too.

sayemthree, I went with your setup, and also ended up with 5mm, 10mm, and 18mm spacers (and various longer wheel bolts) which I'll test fit this weekend.

You went with 5mm spacers on front?

We have too many afternoon thunderstorms to risk the 2 hour drive to the track on Rcomps, so I fold down the seats, load them across, and secure with a couple of bungies to the car seat tethers.

VIR on Sept 13/14, gonna be a blast

I wnet with 18x9 and 5mm spacers in the rear. I think 10 mm is closer to ideal but tire rack did not have them for the M3,

I HATE changing tires and the track and taking them in my backseat. I prefer to do it in the comfort of my own garage. T Rcomp tires are ok in the rain if you are sensible. of course it never rains in Sunny SO Cal.

Here in Ontario you do not dare to drive with the Hoosiers,V710 or the Goodrich R1's on the street.You are likely going to get stopped and have an impound to deal with.Even though they are DOT rated tire they will hassle you big time about the tread depth. and the fact they are a competion tire.I got stopped in my Z06 coming back from a slalom a the cop showed a document that named the Hoosiers by name.That cop was a good guy and let me continue but did warn me for the future.

Suspense is my middle name

It was a list of tires that were prohibited on the streets of Ontariobut this was a few years ago.This list include such tires as the Goodrich R1,Khumo V700,Hoosiers and anything that could be considered a "racing slick".This was long before the days of the modern"street racing law" so I am sure if you get hassled by the wrong man,it would even be more of a pain in the ass.

Since were talking about DOT slicks...then they are legal in the republic of Ka......BUT there is a tread depth section....

27465. (a) No dealer or person holding a retail seller's permit shall sell, offer for sale, expose for sale, or install on a vehicle axle for use on a highway, a pneumatic tire when the tire has less than the tread depth specified in subdivision (b). This subdivision does not apply to any person who installs on a vehicle, as part of an emergency service rendered to a disabled vehicle upon a highway, a spare tire with which the disabled vehicle was equipped.
(b) No person shall use on a highway a pneumatic tire on a vehicle axle when the tire has less than the following tread depth, except when temporarily installed on a disabled vehicle as specified in subdivision (a):
(1) One thirty-second (1/32) of an inch tread depth in any two adjacent grooves at any location of the tire, except as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3).
(2) Four thirty-second (4/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on a tire on the steering axle of any motor vehicle specified in Section 34500, and two thirty-second (2/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on all other tires on the axles of these vehicles.
(3) Six thirty-second (6/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on snow tires used in lieu of tire traction devices in posted tire traction device control areas.
(c) The measurement of tread depth shall not be made where tie bars, humps, or fillets are located.
(d) The requirements of this section shall not apply to implements of husbandry.
(e) The department, if it determines that such action is appropriate and in keeping with reasonable safety requirements, may adopt regulations establishing more stringent tread depth requirements than those specified in this section for those vehicles defined in Sections 322 and 545, and may adopt regulations establishing tread depth requirements different from those specified in this section for those vehicles listed in Section 34500.

So basically its between 1 to 4/32's depending on how its measured and front=-rear axle etc..... So a knowledgeable CHP could burn you if your DOT slicks are getting pretty worn...
