Anyone take their monopod or tripod as carry-ons for a plane?

I never check anything in, especially my camera equipment, for fear of it getting lost. I always just take a duffel bag of what I need and my camera backpack.

Will I run into issues if I have a monopod packed inside the camera bag? TSA says you can bring one bag of photo equipment, so it would technically fall under that category, but I can see them being weird about it.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

can it actually fit in your carry-on?
and i remember reading on the TSA site that all tripods/monopods must be checked.

Well I didn't buy it yet, but it's about 16" collapsed, so it would fit in the bag.

Last trip I packed my monopod in checked baggage, but then I saw a woman board with a tripod attached to her camera bag. I think a monopod would be more likely to be seen as a potential weapon, but it probably depends on the whims of the TSA folks you encounter.
