Funny how that only applies to the people making insulting comments to start with. Not to the people voicing their opinions in return, eh?

As I said before, there's the freedom to express any opinion that comes to your head, and then there's having tact (which is different than being PC!).

And if you express your tactless opinion on a public forum, then expect to have that opinion challenged. If you can't handle having the opinion challenged, don't post it. I mean, if someone walked up to you on the street and said, "dude. I think your girlfriend is fugly." Would you nod and say to yourelf, "gee, what a nice person for sharing his opinion." ? Or would you punch him in the face?

If the mazda didnt have a emblem you would think they were the same freaking car.... have fun driving a mazda with a STI badge. LOL
You're blind if you think those two hatches look the same. They have one similar characteristic: the blistered front fenders. That's all. Everything else is different. Ok, ok, they have four wheels...I'll give you that one.

I think the STi is just as original as the 1er. They're both oddballs, and they both have unique styling cues (1er has fish eyes and a pronounced lower swage line, STi has broken character line and fat hood scoop).

I like the new design. It's super functional with the hatch (I have a '00 Golf and it can haul so much more crap than anything with a trunk).

Also: What makes you think the old design was a good looking car? IMO - not better looking in any way.

There's a side view of that white STI with gold Advan RS's on it. Looks stellar!

i woudl have to say as far as looks go, the new sti is not my favorite. But being the fact that it's somewhat of an odd looking car it makes me respect a good looking one even more. lower it, but some aggressive wheels, exhaust, and do somethinga bout the taillights and you ahve a sick car. If you think about it.. you can say that about the e90 too...

I dont think there are any "really" good looking cars in $30k-$35k range in the past 3 years. There's always some part that we dislike in every car....thats just how it is now.

to say that the STI is UGLY is just subjective

I respect your opinion, but
Dude... serious no really serious, Besides the (hood scoop)
1. Look at the Hood lines and the roof lines...
2. Look at all 4 windows, they are almost identical in size and shape. Even the rear 1/4 window is exactly the same.
3. rear and front fenders also look very similar also.
4. They are not the same car but they look very similar....

I can be a big boy and admit their are a few lines that don't run the same but to call me blind in that picture comparison is rubbish, if you seriously cannot admit both cars share some serious design similarities then

Of course you can take 2 flat photos and compare body lines, I just did? and I'm doing it again. : ) Here are two hatchbacks that have their own design they stand on their own. like them or hate them. The topic is the New STI

My point: Not all hatchback have the same window design, lines and shape.....unfortunately New STI & Mazda 3 do share some remarkable common design. (subie)STI took Mazda 3 design put a hood scoop and called it a day. sorry to me the new STI looks like a boy racer mazda 3 what are you drinking!

^ I don't know man. I've seen a lot of Mazda 3s on the road and a few of the STIs and they don't look similar to me at all, except that they are both hatchbacks. The 3s have a taller stance while the STIs have a wider stance and a more aggressive look to them.

Well thank you for respecting my opinion, but I still disagree with your statements, and the points you just outlined.

1. I would say the rooflines are similar, but then again, most hatches these days have very similar profiles. The hood lines are vaguely similar in concept. Their execution is completely different. The Mazda lacks the large scoop, and the lines/surfacing of the hood in general are different. Flat images don't help, as one user posted.

2. The rear 1/4 window is similar, I'll give you that, but the shoulder line running along the bottom of the window is different. You can only do so much with windows, and I admit that the rear 1/4 is where most of the unique touches are made.

3. The front fenders, maybe. Going off of these pics alone, the front fenders are similar. I know for a fact that the surfaces of the rear fenders are entirely different. The STi has a broken line that runs down a blistered arch, whereas the Mazda3 has a traditional swollen fender. The pic completely betrays the STi's surfacing on the rear fender.

4. I'll just list what I see:
-Different headlights
-Different taillights
-Different surface language - The STi's is full of tension. The Mazda3's is bubbly.
-Different character lines, and different execution of said lines
-Different lower swage lines
-Different rockers
-Different bumpers
-Different wheels
-I could go on...the closest resemblance I can find besides the rear 1/4 window kink would be the overall grille shape.

Here's the car I was talking about. It had $8k in mods. I only know of the rear spoiler, wheels, CAI, tune and exhaust. Not sure what else was modded. It looks pretty cool though. It made 300whp and 328wtq with those mods.
The last one is modified by Crawford. They turn out some very potent Scoobies.

I think its one of the most aggressive looking hatchbacks out there. A lot of people here seem to forget that just about everytime subaru changed the wrx/sti people would think that it's hideous at first, minus 2004-2005.

The 08 Sti has grown on me and I think its still a sick car with plenty of potential and loads more practicality. Hatchs rule.

IMO it’s not a pretty car and I own one. It’s not ugly though, and just like the E82 it looks better in person. If you take a side-by-side of the 3 and STI they are similar as most hatchbacks are. The subie roofline is very curved, a lot more so than say a GTI (actually prefer the GTI/A3 style). There are also a lot of angles on the subie, large flares, vents and scoops.

If you think they look similar then wait until the new MS3 comes out. The hood scoop on it looks just like the WRX.

The white STI above has the factory spoiler; it’s the front lip that is aftermarket. Also about 3-4k of those mods are wheels and tires alone (advans aren’t cheap).

The first pic just screams 'I've got a baby in the back and I still have not grown up yet.'

And the second one confirms it.

STI is so bitting on the design of the mazda 3 minus the hood scoop...

without the badge I mistake it for the mazda 3 every time, to each their own..
