Autoblog picks 1M over M3
I know this is already on the bimmerpost homepage, but I thought this was particularly interesting. Although I have no intention on buying a 1M Coupe (at least not this generation), I've always been a big proponent of it and coming from a 135i, had a feeling a 1 series M car would have the potential to be more fun to drive than the M3. Looks like the guys over at Autoblog feel that's the case:

I know the M3 fanboys will chime in with the witty childish remarks about the 1M, but I think BMW has a winner here. So far the reviews have been very positive.

I wouldn't call it more car. You definitely get more with the M3. Just depends on what you are looking for.

I don't think M3 sales will suffer much if at all.

as for me, ive lusted for that M3 badge on my rear end ever since i got my learners permit 20 some years ago...regardless of how cheap or how good a M1 drives, theres no way im gonna give up two M's for it...next will be M5, M6, M7 etc..then move onto the "GT" letters...GT2, GT3...so on and so forth

What happens next generation when the 1M and M3 are both turbocharged?

Dr. Segler has been a lighting rod for criticism by many including myself, but he did get one thing right. The 1M targets a completely different demographic (i.e. those who cannot or choose not to pony up the bucks for an M3 yet want M'esque performance) from that targeted by the M3. @ OP: I like both the 1M and M3; the M3 much more. The former would serve me well as a DD while the latter would be a non-DD ride. To each his own.

I might have chosen the 1M over the M3 if it been available back when I got my M3. I would have certainly missed the S65 but overall I think the 1M would be more to my liking. I will definitely keep my eye on the next-gen 1M although the turbocharged direction troubles me. If I'm going for a turbo BMW it won't be the next M3.

I saw a AW 1M at the Cars and Coffee meet today in Irvine.
I like the red stitching on the leather seats and the shifter looks nice with the suede boot. A 6MT M3 you almost instantly have to change the shifter to a ZHP one since the M3 looks to long not sporty. Overall the 1M is nice. But it looks like it is geared towards the younger crowd. |

I got a chance to sit in one at Bimmerfest today. Leading up to the show, I was starting to feel the temptation of the 1M creeping up on me. That feeling is now gone.
The updated panels do a good job of masking the (in my opinion) ugly lines of the E82. I love the air curtains and intakes on the bumpers, and the car's stance is incredibly aggressive, but it still looks like a 1-series -- I have a hard time getting away from that. The interior is much cheaper than I thought it would be. I love the alcantara and the orange stitching, but there's way too much plastic on the inside, and the buttons for the AC and radio are of lower quality than the M3. I appreciate the smaller size of the 1M and would actually prefer it over the M3's length. It seemed taller than my car, which coupled with the shorter length of the 1M really made it appear boxy and stubby -- again, it's hard for it to not look like a 1-series. I didn't drive the car, but I'm sure it's more driveable as a DD than the M3 is. That said, there's no way I would give up the screaming S65 for a sputtering turbo. The 1M may be BMW's only true sports car in its lineup, but we drive an everyday supercar.
