I've heard SSKs aren't great for your gear box, especially ones that really shorten the throw. The synchros can't match the speed fast enough so you get increased wear on your synchros, especially 2nd gear.
I've had the UUC SSK in my E46 for 40k miles and 3 years. Its held up very well, you do HAVE to properly torque the 6 bolt for the ERK mechanism. But I grind when I've got full throttle in first and then quickly shift to 2nd. I have to wait a quick moment before it will go in. Never had that issue with the OEM shifter with the same Royal Purple gearbox oil

UUC SSK was recently installed (no DSSR) and there was a clear improvement from the stock shifter. Every throw is not only shorter, but there's a strong gated feel / notch for each gear. I like the increased precision / diesel feel when I'm shifting fast, especially at high speeds. Zero issues with synchros or the grinding some other ppl mentioned.
If you like the buttery, and slightly rubbery OEM shifter throw - then don't change it. At the end, it's a preference sort of mod I believe. It was worth $$ IMO. |

I now have a E92 M3 with AA SSK and DSSR and do not have this issue at all. Infact, the shifting feels smoother than the stock shifter. The throw in the E92 SSK is not as short as the throw that was on my old E46 M3. |

I personally have the RE shifter + ZHP Knob + Clutch Spring delete and I LOVE the way my M shifts.. At first, I had the RE installed and I was 50% satisfied. The throws WERE shorter but it was a bit notchier. This threw off my timing with the clutch as I felt like it would take just as long to shift as OEM because of the notchiness. I needed more... Then I did the clutch spring delete mod. This is probably the BEST clutch mod to date.. I always felt like the clutch point was ambiguous and was always changing (although it wasnt). This simple and no cost mod fixed this. Last I wanted to find a way to fix the notch on my shifter and I tried the ZHP knob since it was such a low cost option. Slapped it on for a week and I've been in love ever since.. My recommendation is this; get the ZHP knob and do the clutch spring delete mod first. If you're not satisfied at this point then do a SSK to shorten your throws. RE is a bit notchier but has a better feel going into each gate (1-2-3-4-5-6).. You can distinguish the gates much better. The UUC+DSSR might be shorter in throws but it is not notchy at all. You may feel like you're not sure if you're fully engaged in a gear. Hope this helps. Reference: I HAVE the RE shifter. My best friends has the UUC DSSR combo. Also, I came from a 997s and 987s both with the porsche SSK which feels WORLDS better than the M3 (everyone knows this). At this point, I can actually say my combo feels great and makes me very happy about the way my M shifts.

As far as an SSK I have the ZHP knob and am very satisfied with it. I had the UUC SSK with DSSR in my E46 and wasn't that happy with it until I added a weighted knob to the shifter. My point being get a weighted knob first and then see how you like it. |

The ZHP knob is a definite must buy. I just got the UUC SSK installed, though, and makes driving infinitely better. Probably the best mod I've done to date, and I've already got Dinan intake, pulley, software. Thinking about clutch spring delete. Anyone think it is easy to DIY? Do you recommend it?

does anybody have a picture of the ZCP shifter as well as an installation manual? there are tons of BMW OEM shifters out there on ebay as well as at the know tuner webshops. Just wanna be sure to order the right one.
As the stock shifter knob is one part with the shift boot does that mean that I will need a ZCP shift knob as well as a new shift boot? Thx for the help guys.

i'm starting to fucking hate the uuc ssk. it's feels like its getting notchier and its really difficult to engage 1st gear sometimes. if i keep this car long enough, i'm swapping it out for the rogue engineering one..
i'd recommend that if anyone wants to get a short shift kit.

I don't see why none of the vendors can make a good SSK for our cars. My old Mk4 Golf R32 had a phenomenal EIP SSK (before they went under). I absolutely loved the shorter yet smooth throw on it. Haven't really heard that from any BMW owners

The 2nd BEST shifter feeling and gearbox setup available is a Tremec TR6060 with the Hurst Short Shifter Kit.
(the BEST is the stock >2009 997 GT3 RS but that's a Porsche with the mother of all gearboxes as well as the mother of all steerings) Got that setup in my other car. It's a '09 Dodge Challenger SRT8. Just as a comparison to our stuff. Watch this video here. You can exactly see how firm, precise and short the shifts are. And by the way: There's nothing cooler on the planet like a hurst shifter with the white ball. I'd love to have that feeling in my BMW, too.

Has anybody installed this OEM BMW knob here? It's not the ZHP one but I like the look of this one better.
Just found an ebay auction where the seller says it's BMW OEM # 25118037308 Looks definitely shorter than the stock M3 one. Any experience? Can I get one or should I get the ZHP like "all others" ?

That looks similar to the ZHP knob, including the aluminum band at the base. I suspect the installation is the same as described for the ZHP. My installation took less than 30 minutes from opening the box to putting away the tools.

I have the RE SSK and I wouldn't get it again. It may be better built than OEM but the improvement is subtle at best. They didn't make enough change from OEM so what you get is more noise, harshness and vibration but with little or no significant gain in shift performance.

I have the RE... installed it myself. Shifting performance and precision is definitely better. A weighted knob would further improve the performance but for now I am happy with the mod and having done it myself, I think its worth the price paid.
On a side note. I also had a Porsche 997.1 C2S with OE SSK. Porsches have their own issues. Getting into 1st gear when rolling to a stop was a huge issue experienced by just about every owner. Jason
