Diagnostics Question
This is regarding a '08 335i Auto...
Tonight I was with one of my friends in his 335i and we were noticing a clicking sound, almost like a noise maker. It was definitely coming from the front of the car so when we parked, I popped the hood and asked him to rev the motor to see if we could see or hear anything in particular. As the RPMs increased the sound got significantly louder and faster. Once the car hit 4k RPM (on a slow rev up) the front of the motor released a large puff of black smoke (this came from in between the radiator and the engine block). I originally thought it was one of the turbos, so I had him rev it slow to minimize turbo spool but it didn't make a difference one way or the other. Due to this it led me to believe the fan on the front of the motor is rubbing on something...any thoughts? Also, the car smelled like it was burning once the engine turned off, not like oil or how the car is supposed to smell, it was something decidedly different, more of a roasting smell...Thanks for the help guys

I would imagine this is more of a 3-series issue than 335 specific
