Why did you get the transmission that you got?

Simple question. Why did you get your transmission type? I'm hoping to get my first ever BMW, and I have been driving manual cars for the last three years, so I am after a 6 speed m3. Just curious why others choose manual or auto and if they like it and/or if they want to change.

DCT. Wife.

It's grown on me. I would have been happy with either.

Feel I always want the latest and fastest technology. Just personal. I also personally feel this engine is much better matched with a automatic (I know not true auto) gear box as I do a TON of downshifting to get into the powerband. Too much shifting with a 6 speed for my liking to stay in the powerband.

Loved the way dct drives, was unimpressed with standard gear box, keeping track car with 6spd so I won't miss not having a clutch, wife can dive it and we can both go to the track together. Figured this is where technology is going, was shocked about the new gt3's, have to say that somewhat made it a reality for me. Plus this is a dd.

DCT consumes less
DCT in D-mode in traffic is a blessing
DCT i love the shifters
DCT looks better
DCT is the latest shift technology

6mt, don't trust the concept of "lifetime fluid" in the DCT

now that I know it can be changed, I'd be happy with either one

I wanted to tryout the new technology when I traded my E36 M3.

I have taught college level automatic transmissions & power train for 37 years and enjoy learning about new developments. I have enjoyed the mix of auto and manual transmission with the M-DCT. The daily entertainment of shift control has been the best part of the E92 M3.

6spd. I only drive manual...there is no art in driving an auto/DCT/whatever they call it this year.

Technologically, the semiauto is better hence it's use in F1 racing. But I am not a race car driver so ...

Test drive both if you can, the answer may be more obvious to you. I had DCT ordered then switched to MT after driving it (but I'm an old school guy to begin with). I also came from an E46 330i, and talk about having to work the engine in an MT--the M3 MT to me is significantly more flexible--can leave it idling/crawling in 1st in traffic without disengaging the clutch, can easily start from 2nd gear from a stop and can skip gears on upshifts--so given where I came from, that probably influenced my opinion as well.

For faster (and much easier) tracking and if your commute is in traffic, DCT may be the better choice if still unsure between the two.

I felt like a weekend toy should be a manual transmission. If i bought another one, I'd try the DCT next time.

Houston traffic ... DCT. It really is the best of both worlds. I've had many MT's but I love this DCT.
